Backup Your Website

Last Update: July 27, 2015

Last January I made a video using Powerpoint. It was to show how to back up your website using FTP and FileZilla.

Even though SiteRubix hosting is very secure and backups are done frequently you probably want to control your own backups. You need to use Tools==> Export to backup your posts, pages and comments. Then use FTP to backup your themes, settings, plugins and users.

I like to keep 3 backups of both the exported file and the FTP.

Today's update is my 'over-the-shoulder' style video. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for checking it out :)

I have successfully backed up my main website via FileZilla but I have two Siterubix websites that I would like to back up through there too. With these however there is no FTP data. Will the back-ups work just the same or should I back up via a different means?
Regards
Adrian

There's no FTP with the SiteRubix subdomains BUT support backs them up every couple of days so you're mostly covered. I always use Tools==> Export to back up the posts, pages and comments. It doesn't back up your settings, plugins, themes or uploads but at least your content is safe.

How do you avoid the malware swamp on the FileZilla download page?

The 'Browse All Files' link below the green button takes you to all the clean install files. I thought the green button was clean but I'm only human and sometimes I'm wrong.

Hi Marion, thanks for the video, most informative, but I have a problem. I've tried to download and install filezilla but my anti virus, Avira, keeps giving me a message:
------------
Warning! This site might harm your system. It was blocked for your protection.
This website has been identified as a malware site. Malware infects your computer and can include viruses, worms, spyware and trojan horses.
---------------
Just wondering if there is a conflict between Avira and FileZilla and does anyone else have the same problem.
I deactivated All In One Seo and tried Yoast now I've lost my sites verification on Google+ and all my data. I've tried re-verifying it through Namecheap but they say they can only do it if I'm using their default servers.
I've downloaded the HTML Verification File but can't upload it to my site.
Any Ideas? Thanks

Hi Harry,

There WAS a problem with PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) being attached to FileZilla but the latest version is clean. I downloaded and installed it on my laptop to make sure I was comfortable recommending it. My anti-virus program and Malwarebytes (Premium) were both happy. :)

For your site verification you can use FTP Hope this helps,
Marion

Hi Marion. Good reminder! It's one of those things that is usually put on the back burner yet is very important. I have all my sites backed up to my Dropbox account. So far, I've never had to use the backups!

Better safe than sorry. It's a good idea to have a scheduled day/date to back up. I use Mondays for exporting the posts and pages and the first of the month for backing up the rest.

Hi Marion, did you mean that SiteRubix support is also buckuping our websites? Ididn't know about that...
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes, I'm not sure if it's every day or every second day but the websites are backed up frequently.

Excellent Marion! If I only understood how important backing up your website was a year ago I wouldn't have lost my content on a website I transferred to other hosting. Live and learn, huh?
