One thing that I have been realizing after 3 months with WA is that you should not JUST look at the monthly searches and competition when you choose a keyword you want to write about.

It's also important to do a SERP analysis. Have a look at the first 10 results on your query and see if you think you can outrank these one's.

What I look for

• If a lot of the pages on the SERP is optimized for the specific keyword (title, url and description).
• If a lot of the pages have a low page rank. I use Moz Bar to see this. At least half of them should have a lower page rank than 25.
• Is there forum posts? These are usually easy to outrank.
• Is there other affiliate website like yours? That way you know you can outrank them with time.
• Any pages talking about stuff completely unrelated to your search query?
• Not too many youtube videos.

So basically you will see and think for yourself. "With some time can I outrank the pages on the top search page".
