Bad Plugins

This will be short.

Without naming and shaming, just a reminder. There are a lot of crappy plugins out there even with a lot of stars.

Most people are ignorant about what is good for them. That includes plugins, wether they are for shopify or wordpress or anything else.

I am a programmer. I know that writing a code is not an easy job, especially if you want to publish that work which includes regular updates and pleasing customers. I don't publish my programs, I make them and use them.

So I am on both sides of the game. Plugins user and creator (not publisher).

Today I found yet another one that was "recommended", and sounded great, until I installed it and tried it.

The result:

Within two minutes I received a welcome email and a sorry to see you go email.

What I am trying to say here is: a good rating, a recommendation may not be enough. Rating may be nothing more than a sheep minded mob following a bell.

What to look for in a plugin?

  1. It does what it promotes.
  2. It is not a resource hog. You don't want your website to load with 1990s speed.
  3. It is safe. No one but you can make absolutely sure that a plugin is actually safe and secue. Do the extra mile and make sure it is.
  4. It is free to try, or has a refund guarantee. That's a no brainer but I decided to add to the list.
  5. It is compatible. Not all themes fly with all plugins. That needs testing, or if you are on that level, modifying the theme code.
  6. You really do need it. Second guess yourself. Like before you buy a new gear, keep going back for it and make sure it's not an impulsive decision.

If you know more to add to that list, please post it in the comments, so others (me) can learn from your experience.

(This post was fully written by human (me), not even a grammar checker was used - it might be obvious lol)

Ta!

Andy, I wish you would name and shame! or if not share a plugin that can check plugins and then disable it'
Its not easy to discern which are good or bad with only basic knowledge.

Rob

Hi Rob,

I think Kyle has a list of all the banned plugins here. Hosted websites here at WA have a very high security. In addition to that, WA also restricts plugins that are hogging resources, slowing down the website, etc. so if you run into a plugin that may be something like I described in my post, it is likely that you will get a warning if you host with WA.

I use other hosting services for different purposes, including Shopify, GoDaddy, etc. WA is very beginner friendly, so I think you will be fine if you host your websites here.

Thank you for explaining

My pleasure.

Hi Andy!

Thanks for sharing! I'll keep this in mind.

Cheers mate!
