Do you research existing articles on Google before writing yours to try to rank? Do you only write articles that you KNOW will be better than what already exists?

It is more about “RELEVANCE” than the best. The article addresses a need, solves a problem and answer questions people have. Google is facilitating what people are searching with what answers are available that best fit those searches.
I didn't really research a lot to find how to write articles. I just looked that I am ranked for 5 articles on all of the search engines Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Just write how you would like to read it with really good content and knowledge they will rank it just takes some time to do it.

I think the best part of being here at WA is that you can ask so many questions and find the right answers or someone who can help you find the right answers.

This is why you train at WA. They will give you the basis to write content in the best way: relevant, helpful and challenging. Furthermore they teach you the best SEO, so that all of this will be best ranked in the search machines.
Yes, I do research before I write articles in my own words, as anybody should do, unless you are already totally familiar with the subject. The purpose being that, if not already, you will need to become an authority in your field. Have a good and content full 2020!

One way I do it is to think I am in a bar having a beer with some guy who is telling me his problems. And I have all the answers.

Thank you for your answer. I've seen this idea stated in different ways a few times. I'll do my best to start thinking like I'm writing for a friend instead of a professor.
