this is not simple to explain, but generally spoken you have to build online authority. How do you do that?
- post frequently quality content
- be social (interact on social media)
- be popular (get comments on your site and interact with the users)
- ... you get the idea?

It is always the matter of a particular post or page, you rank for them not for the site. So good keyword work is essential. Try to find keywords with as low as possible competition, ideally =0.
Yeah true! If you gain in authority with time it will be easier to rank. About finding low competition keywords, I also published a training: 3 steps to find the best long tail keywords with no competition
