my first rodeo
I was about 13 in the year 1950 we were living on a farm that was four miles from a small town in Oklahoma, I was invited to go to a rodeo in that small town. The get ready to go I had to fix some problems, I did not own a saddle so I had to ride bare back and that created another problem, a neighbor had given me a pair of boots that was to big but that all I had to wear. I would jump up on my horse my boots would fall off. I fixed that. I took a piece of binder twine up one pant leg and down the other. Then I tie the twine to the boot straps to were my boots would not fall off, fixed that. The time came to go so I grab my hat and I was ready to go. I was excited!!. I was told that anyone that rode in the grand entry of the rodeo they got in free, that was the deal for me. my two friends came by and we took off for the rodeo. We got there in time to be in the grand entry so that work out real good. It was great. Then the contests begin. We had the bucking horse first then the barrel racing.for women. We had calf roping and a few other things for the children that were there. Finally, the night ended and it was all over. Time for the long ride home. We had a wonderful day to remember in days to come. I am thankful for all the good memories of my youth.
