Is Google the King of Search?

There are many naysayers out there about the whole Google dynasty. Many marketers out there are trying to instil the idea that "social is the way to go" or that "mobile is the 21st century", but these as advertising mediums are still highly unproven compared to good ol' website rankings, paid placements, and content network buys on Google.

comScore just released the Search Engine Rankings report for August 2012 and it indicated the following data in terms of search engine market shares.

Google Sites: 66.4%
Microsoft Sites: 15.9%
Yahoo! Sites: 12.8%
Ask Network: 3.2%
AOL, Inc. : 1.7%

I am by no means saying that Google search is the only approach, but I want to emphasize the importance of it within your marketing activities. People are using Google search through their desktops, laptops, phones, tablets, and other estranged devices that can connect to the Internet.

If you get ranked, it is a big deal!

If you want to target relevant audiences, Adwords is still an effective approach.

And not to be overlooked is the MSN and Yahoo networks, holding a 28.7% market share. That is 50% of the traffic gets so getting rankings in these two search engines (which usually coincide with one another) can add a huge boost to your bottom line.

Search is here to stay. The devices we use to "search" from are going to change slightly, but at the core we are curious people and we are always going to be looking to find new information.

great post. The numbers are interesting.

I'm guilty of spending too much of my time worrying about my Google rankings.
I think if I do well in the Google Search, the others follow.

That is a good approach, but better yet, create content for your visitors and Google and the other search engines will follow.

Keywords are the key to the search engines....better kw used or combination ....more visible you become to the engines....getting ranked is a big deal....As much as google can piss you off....it still leads the search engines.....and they are still very much part of all my campaigns....good read Kyle

Yeah, I tend to want to chase the leaders in search which is where you have the most engaged visitors. Google is still the king of search and king of relevant traffic.

I've had a lot better success getting to the top of Bing with my websites - once or twice, with a keyword rich URL I hit #1 in Bing in a week or two while not even being on the first 10 pages of Google.

Do the same seo techniques apply to getting ranked on Bing as they do for Google? Or do you need to apply different techniques?

Say what you like, but Google still will get you where you need to go, quicker than any of the rest. Speaking from my own personal experiences.

Absolutely. I agree with you. If you have a marketing plan online and it doesn't include Google you are missing out on 2/3rds of all the "engaged" audiences out there!

Didn't Google have a bigger share at one point? Are they losing market share?

Yeah they did, but they saw a dip when Bing went crazy with their advertising efforts in 2011. They are starting to climb again (they had around 63% in early 2011) and every percentage point is a big deal.

Agreed, Bing seems to be making some headway though. They (Bing)have a long way to go but it will be interesting.
