Act Like a Dumb Fish and Get Caught!

Last Update: December 06, 2017

Every. Single. Day....

...someone comes to me here within chat or asks me privately, “Hey Kyle, what do you think of this product?”

My answer is alway the same. “I don’t know?”

Because I don’t know. The thing I do know is that everything you need to succeed online is here within the Wealthy Affiliate community. The tools, the support, the training, the networking.

Sure, there might be some OK programs out there, but the more you continue to “seek” that shiny object, the more and more you are acting like a fish...and in many cases, a dumb fish.

Let me get to that though (by no means am I calling you dumb).

There are two types of businesses in this world.

There are those that are successful and those that fail. YOU are a business, lets remember this...I am not referring to some corporate entity. You are an entrepreneur and you want success...therefore you are a business.

In respect to my fish analogy, there are lots of fish out there in the water competing for food. The same way that there are a lot of people online looking to earn money.

BUT, many fish swim around looking for shiny things to pop-up.

When it does, they bite and often times they get caught by a scam, “fake bait” which only ends up leading to their demise.

The exact same thing is happening online. People (fish) are searching for food (money) and they will go towards any shiny object, rather than figuring out how to properly seek out their own food.

These people get taken complete advantage of unfortunately and buy into every shiny thing that is put in front of them. These are typically scams and these shiny objects lead them to getting caught before they ever have a chance to become a big fish.

The big fish play it cool, take their time, and end up getting as much food as they want!

And often times decide to just eat the small fish...because they can. They are the big fish!

I want you to make a decision today. Do you want to be a big fish or a small fish?

If you come to me asking me about something shiny, I am going to send you to this post. Everything you need to become a big, powerful fish that doesn’t need to seek out the shiny lures that are set out each and every day, here within the community.

If you get eaten going forward, it is not my fault. You have been warned!

Oh, man! This really hits home...when I started online a few months ago, I had no idea what online marketing was and I definitely had no idea of the term "Shiny Object Syndrome".

I have to agree that you must not follow the Big Fish, they are already big and will swallow you if you are not careful. Why? because you are easy bait and do not know better.

When I first opened my FB account, which I was told this would help market myself, "Okay No Problem" but when I did those "Shiny Objects" were everywhere. I personally was not going after them, they were coming after me. Friending me and then pitching to me after a certain period of time, some do it immediately, right after friending you.

It is like the cartoon "Free Birds", where they get you plump like a turkey(feed you value) and then they are ready to take you to the slaughterhouse(pitch). Do not get me wrong some opportunities may work for you but when you are trying to be successful and you are not established, it is not good to go with all different kinds of "Shiny Objects" focus on one. I have made my mind up and mine will be WA...

And, yes I agree that I happen to be one of those ones that was "Temporarily" dumb to the fact of "Shiny Object Syndrome" And this is why?
1. I never been on facebook before so, I was not use to online marketers. I literally have only had an account with them for 3 months. So, everything with social media was new to me, on top of all the aggressive people..lol.

2. And for two I had no idea what was right or wrong when I was being told by the expert "Oh, this opportunity will help you learn more"..So, all the distractions made me extremely lacking the knowledge when it came to "Shiny Object Syndrome" ;(

I did not catch on to this "Shiny Object Syndrome"; until I realized that every day I added a new friend to my FB personal page, someone was trying to promote their program to me, like once a day. And, sometimes I would get like 10 promos a day, which can be very overwhelming for a new entrepreneur.

So, now I have to thank all of those people for dropping into my inbox trying to recruit me because if they did not bombard me with all their offers; before, I could even establish my own foundation, I would not have stopped using facebook. I stopped using facebook so that I could sit back and focus on me and my success.

And that is what made me take my time and search for a real direction, and I have found it now. Wealthy Affiliate...

I do not want to be a small fish, I want to be that strong "Powerful Fish"...so, now I have the confidence to avoid any other opportunities because I have it right here in WA.

Thank you for sharing this, Kyle! It not only helped me but, I know for sure, it can help many of the new upcoming entrepreneurs.

I will constantly revisit this post to keep myself on track.

I can turn other offers down, with the help of solid advice like this!

WA has both feet in REALITY, and this is highly appreciated, and I know it's a platform to success!

Yes, indeed........There's no need to get sidetracked.......

Thank you very much, again..........

Thanks Kyle I must be the dumb "cat" fish as I've been caught hook line and sinker at least 9 times (counting back). It's not so much the money invested but it's the countless hours I have put in that I get most frustrated about.

Although none of these programs have really worked for me I have certainly learned a lot and improved my skill base. I call them programs, but you could call them scams, basically they over promise and under deliver.

I have my own product I really just want to create more traffic. WA at this stage is by far the most genuine experience to date and this is by far the most confident I feel about succeeding as an Internet marketer.

Watch this space!

Great post Kyle, the thing is that you have to tell this in here at WA for about hundred times to get people to understand that this Place is for Learning to make a nice internet Business in the future, and not a "Internet earning fast scam" :)

Thanks, Kyle, for this. I know I need to treat what I'm doing as a business and not a hobby or with the attitude of "I-hope-this-works-someday". When we look at our websites as a business it changes how we view it and how we move forward with it.

There should be no hope involved here Rick. You know it works, it works for millions of people. You just need to take action until it happens, you are going to have breakthrough moments if you do (along with failures, but that is part of the process).

You are definitely getting there! :)

Thanks Kyle for the interesting analogy of fish: dumb fish, small fish or big and powerful fish. This remind me to become the big and powerful fish.
Reply
Kyle Premium
Exactly! And to do this you shouldn't be spending all your time trying to follow around the other fish. You have everything you need here to become that big and powerful fish! :)

Nice post...I certainly want to be a big fish! Unfortunately there are many people out there who are either so desperate that they believe the hype of scams...or who are just downright lazy and stupid. If you're here on WA reading this then relax...you just might become a big fish I say :D

Yeah, that is what it really comes down to. People behave in a way like those looking for a quick fix within the online world. They want that product that reaffirms something that is not a reality, but makes them feel good: Instant Success.

To those that have achieved success know this is not a reality and those that have found WA, fortunately have everything they need within a singular platform to achieve a good deal of success.

This info is all too true. It is particularly difficult when you are broke and desperate. Much easier to avoid all the shiny objects when you have a regular income and aren't looking to make money quickly. None the less though, the rule applies. Especially for anything that cannot be paid by Paypal ('cause you can get your money back if it's a dud) or the more expensive objects out there. If it says easy money, easy traffic, etc avoid it any cost. There is no such thing as easy, no effort anything with a web based business.

Broke and desperate = Hungry Fish. You are more likely to fall for a lure when you are in this state of mind.

I agree with everything that you have said!

Big meanie Lol, I used to do a lot of fishing too, Kyle. Lake and the Gulf Coast, yes it's fun. As I get older I start feeling sorry for just about everything. Having said that I am eating tuna fish tonight!

i've fished my whole life and this analogy rings so true - bluefish schools will bite almost any 'shiny object' when the baitfish are schooling - staying the course and ignoring the distractions will get you the desired results
Reply
Kyle Premium
Yeah, I though the analogy would prove quite relevant to all the folks here that fish. Glad you enjoyed it and keep on ignoring the bait.

I have been on my fourth month in my online marketing training but until now I seem not yet familiarized myself well in this vast ocean called WAU. I spent so much of my time reading success stories and trainings that are too big to swallow by small fish like me. This article, thanks again, Kyle, opens my eyes not to be distracted and go on with my basic training. I will grow just like anybody else in this community that worked so hard to grow into a bigger fish. Although I can give only three hours max for my WA training a day, I will make sure those hours will be concentrated on my basic training. For real growth.

Stop reading and start taking action on what you are reading. You could read yourself into irrelevancy. You are not going to truly start learning until you implement what you learn...action will lead to success (and failure, which is OK and which is part of the path to success). :)

I really like this one it is so true and what all of us tend to fall for at some time in our life. What is worst about this is that we are most vulnerable when we are most needy. So I guess what I am saying is act like you are already rich and that to get that way you were very careful not to waste a dime!

The rich never buy anything unless they see an obvious benefit in the purchase, if you have to search to find what a product does then you are being conned. All spams leave you wondering what you paid for (because in fact it was nothing!).

Thanks Kyle I will post this around to test the reaction!

One thing that people need to understand is that you cannot buy your way into success and I hope this post will validate that idea for many.

So the shiny things like lures can only hook ya if you bite! Learning which is food and which are lures is the key to becoming a big fish! I like it, my man.

Being a big fish in a little pond is a lot like becoming an authority on a micro-niche. Love the analogy here.

Great food for thought to be shared out in the big pond!
Reply
Kyle Premium
Exactly. I would also compare it to competing within a large niche, where most people are lazy and don't know what they are doing. Most people see a big niche as "competitive" without really understanding the fact that most of their competition are small fish seeking out shiny things still!

I am an old fish of the sea. I choose my bait very wisely, if at all! Those shiny things usually do catch us unawares! It's those dull things that do not bob around that I look at. Most fish pass them by because they do not move. Look for these things in the marketing! If you see moving objects, or hypnotic writing, chances are, there's something wrong with it. It is good exercise to delve into some of our television ads and strip them down. Usually you find hot-air sandwiches!

I can write a book on this topic! I have in some of my books already.

Take Robert Allen. In his books he regards the world as a big fish pond and everyone in it fish. This is exactly how these big (and small gurus) regard their customers!

Many times, I've told these folks when I saw the shiny hook with the fat worm, "...this old fish turns his tail against you!"

It isn't so here at WA!

We regard each and everyone that comes in here as humans, not fish!

One day, back in the early 1970s, we had gotten a Publisher's Clearing House mailing. It was supposed to be "personalized" and that only a limited number came out. I know today, this number is made to look as small as it can (yet the $$$ numbers made to look as large as possible) but what I saw was the type in the letter whereever our name or location was didn't line up right with the rest of the font (and the color was off too!)

"How fake!" I said

Remember that back in those days, we didn't have computers nor laser-jet printing!

That stuff stuck out like a sore thumb. Ever since, I have not been easily fooled by rogue advertising. I hate this stuff with a passion! We are bombarded with it constantly. I do not watch television (other than Masterpiece Theatre and educational stuff.)

Ever since, I have been able to pick out the bait and scrutinize the worm. I can see how shiny the hook is, and how sharp and barbed it is!!

Folks, this is true of stuff even today. If you see that shiny object or the Big Red Easy Button, your red flag should come up.

Not to be critical or skeptical of everything that come our way, but we do need to look into what's on the hook before we strike it!

Great post Kyle! WA gets better and better by the day!

Thanks!

You said "I could write a book on this"..and I think you just did. As always Daniel and interesting read and thanks for your insight into the topic. I do feel that sometimes it is tough to distinguish the "shiny" from the "dull" (real) here online, but I think the more we can portray these things in a more obvious way to people, the greater the understanding.

Great comment, everybody unfortunately is looking for that fast, easy buck without putting any time or energy into it - anything thing that is worthwhile requires effort and work that just the way it is. Its so easy to get sucked into the emails that promise you everything and once you bite never deliver. Only been here for a month and have decided to get of my butt and not go for the shiny things and have learnt so much already. Thank Kyle and Carson and everybody in the chat room

Yeah, I think once you bite once it is easier to bite again in the future. It becomes a habitual process of building up hope, buying, realizing that something doesn't work or requires work, and then moving onto the next shiny thing.

You have everything it takes Debbie to succeed online and I look forward to hearing about your successes going forward!
