Most of us grew up believing that quality speaks for itself. Write a beautiful song, record it well, and naturally people will discover it… right? Unfortunately, that’s no longer how the music industry works.

For decades, success in music was closely tied to the strength of the art itself—harmonies, melodies, and lyrics that resonated with listeners. But today? The business side has taken over, and the rules have changed.


The Harsh Reality of the Modern Music Industry

What really drives “success” today isn’t raw talent—it’s industry control. Major record labels and distributors are no longer looking for authentic voices with something new to say. Instead, they manufacture artists to fit a narrative, a style, or an agenda.

Songs are often treated like industrial products—planned in boardrooms, backed with massive marketing budgets, and launched with instant access to platforms. These artists don’t necessarily succeed because they stand out, but because they’ve been designed not to. They repeat the slogans, fit the mold, and keep the system running smoothly.

That’s why so much music sounds the same. It’s also why independent artists with truly original material struggle to break through.


What This Teaches Us About Online Business

At first glance, this may sound discouraging—but here’s where it gets interesting for us as online entrepreneurs.

The music industry today is a mirror of the online world:

  • Authenticity struggles, but it still matters. Independent creators can’t always compete on budget or connections, but they can win through consistent value and real connection with an audience.

Hey, Keith, this means a lot to me. I thought this is an issue only in South Sudan where artists no longer perform for the sake of it but to align with the needs, the trends, and use speakers (recorded songs) instead of them singing live as they used to.

I even wrote an article about how disconnecting this can be, especially for me who love to see someone doing his/her job with passion, just as I do mine. The tips are great, and I'll keep thinking about how to focus on my authentic voice as I write to tackle political issues in South Sudan, Africa, and the World.

Exactly right, Keith! Music selection for your target audience is everything.
Your point about authenticity vs. manufactured content is so true. When choosing music for campaigns, I always consider my niche first but finance blogs need different energy than lifestyle brands targeting Gen Z or millennials as myself.

Too many marketers use generic background music instead of understanding their audience's musical preferences. Authentic music choices that align with your brand will always outperform with better selections. Great insight!
