Following the rules

Last week we picked up my boyfriend's son for a 5-week visit-- along with the anticipation of fun memories that come with his visits there is also a little bit of dread because we know that it will take a few days to acclimate him to a household with rules and structure. At home with just his mother, Jacob pretty much sets the rules even though he is only 7!

Jacob tells her whether or not he feels like taking a bath. And whether or not he feels like brushing his teeth. We bought him a Kindle for Christmas this past year, and prior to purchasing it we talked to his mother about setting up a child's profile to keep him away from things that are inappropriate and setting up parental controls. Already this visit I have discovered that he has the password to access his mother's profile and there I have caught him looking at content that he should not have access to at his age.

When Jacob is at our house, he never questions or hesitates when we tell him it is time to bathe or brush his teeth. He also does not have access to his Kindle most of the time, as we feel it is important for him to find other ways to entertain himself through playing with toys, making crafts, etc. He actually seems to thrive in an environment with rules and routine.

This is a lot like us here in the Wealthy Affiliate community -- we have to establish our own "rules" and routine to keep moving forward with our websites. If we do not write content on a regular basis or establish some sort of rules for ourselves, we might find ourselves staring blankly at our computer screens trying to decide which task to finish first. By setting up a routine, we are certain to benefit -- just as Jacob does when he comes to visit at our house.

What are sorts of "rules" or routines do you follow as you work on growing your business? I would love to hear some of them!

Since I have been watching my great granddaughter and the days are not always the same; it is a challenge to keep to a schedule. I have been trying to keep to a schedule of writing a post on Tuesday; unless I have Bella. Then Wednesday. Tuesday or Wednesday is mowing the lawn and cleaning. I usually do my commenting early evening or late at night. I need to find a way to schedule in my lessons though. I haven't been getting to that. There are too many other things going on in my life. Thanks for a good post.

Jeannie

I babysit for grandkids as well, so I know how that goes! That is usually when stuff gets moved to the next day!

I was just reminded that if I want others to follow the home rules I need to make the example sometime we tend forget ourselves. We had parents that set rules but it was more like they said: "do a I say and not what I do.!"
Always a better way
Linda

That is how my parents were most of the time!

ya and we tend to fall back into that but we new then it was not right as we know to day that it isn't right. We had come a long way to make things better for the next generation.
thanks Kristin for this reminder

What rules! You're absolutely right...and it's a good Remington be more disciplined. Debbie

Yes, I am reminded by Jacob and my grandkids all the time about following the rules!

I do the same by making a list, and trying to follow it, and if I don't get it all done, I move things around for the next day! :)

They do say that great minds think alike! LOL Thank you!

You're welcome, and we do think a lot alike! :) lol

I'm guilty...:)

We all are at times, Nick! It is something we have to make ourselves do -- otherwise things might not ever get done!

I definitely have to work on it. Thanks again!

I have started to write out my checklist each night for the following day. I also keep a list for the week as a whole.
It has helped a great deal.

That is kind of how I have set mine up! And if something does not get done on the given day, it gets moved to the top of the next day's list!

it's a matter of creating habits that you follow on a daily basis

It definitely is! Thank you!

Hello Kristin,
I agree completely. As an adult it is tougher to impose rules on yourself! I had been kind of going by the seat of my pants while going through the training. Today I sat down and created a game plan for the rest of the year with daily lists of tasks. This will help me stay on point. Now the trick is to not waiver! Hopefully the joy of accomplishment will outweigh the ease of procrastination. Thank you again for the wonderful post.
Valerie

You are welcome! I have a checklist that I follow on a daily basis -- just have not put my long-term goals down on paper yet! But they are all up there in my mind! LOL

You definitely want to follow them Kristin. Google, WA and the Grand Master establish them. We all need guidance!

Yes, we do! Sometimes I feel like I need more than others, but it is definitely a necessary item!

Very good post. I absolutely agree. You have to develop a routine not only for how much content you want to put out, but then how you proactively get it out to the masses as best you can. Even have a routine for the way you lay out your content in each post via its structure.

Nice post!

Thank you! And thank you for taking time to comment!

Of course! :)
