I Awoke to a Bizarre Event at 2:00 in the Morning!

Okay, so this really has nothing to do with WA, other than the fact that once I had this experience, I couldn't go back to sleep right away so I finished a post I'd been working on, then wrote this one because I just had to share with someone what just happened.

I was startled awake at around 2 am this morning after hearing a man desperately yelling for someone to help him and to call the police. I opened my window and yelled out, "What's going on bud?" He only yelled for help again, so I quickly got dressed and went outside to see if I could find the man who was asking for help.

I crossed the street to where I'd heard his voice coming from, and after searching in the dark for a moment, I found him lying in the driveway of the home across the street from me. I asked him what was going on and he said that he'd been shot and he asked me to call the police. I pulled out my phone and was preparing to do exactly that, when a police car came driving up to the scene.

I quickly explained that I'd heard yells for help and had just come out to see what was going on. In the meantime, other police cars had arrived, and after giving my brief explanation, they quickly went to the man lying in the driveway to begin asking him what had happened and help him while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.

After the paramedics arrived and began to help the man, an officer returned to me and, after explaining again that I'd been awakened by the man's yells for help and had just come out to see what was happening when the first police car showed up. I let him know I hadn't seen anything nor did I know what occurred, so he let me return home stating that if they had any further questions, they'd let me know.

I live in a small community of mostly religious (Mormon) residents, and violent crimes like this are not really a regular occurrence. So, to have someone get shot essentially right outside my house is a bit frightening, to say the least! Now the police have crime scene tape up around the yard and they're still out there doing whatever investigation they're doing into this event.

Luckily, I was the only person in my household who was awakened by this madness, and I didn't want to wake up my housemates to tell them what went down, but I felt I had to share this with someone, so thank you WA friends and community for being there for me as I share this crazy experience.

Wow Kevin... sounds like a frightening experience...

Good on you for going outside and helping the lad though...

Many wouldn't....

Gun crime seems to be increasing rapidly in the US from what I have read, when is the Government going to do something about it?

Probably never as they earn so much money from firearms...

Take care buddy!

A bit scary, yes. Come to find out today, this man was apparently trying to break in to my neighbor's house, and that's allegedly how he got shot. I got this update from a different neighbor, so I don't know the accuracy of it, but that makes more sense considering where he was at when I went out and saw him lying there in front of my neighbor's door. It would also explain why they were not out there but were apparently at home when the police knocked on their door. If it was, indeed, the burglar I assisted, that makes the experience even MORE scary!

That certainly makes more sense Kevin but you're right!

MORE scary indeed!

You're the good samaritan... Karma will reward you graciously! On the flip side, you had some excitement, at least, but I hope the guy will be ok. He was either at the wrong place at the wrong time, or he was naughty enough to anger someone who happened to own a gun of some sort.

I come from a small town where people seem so bored with their own lives that they have to look for trouble around every turn possible. Hence, I made enemies that I didn't even deserve, as I never bothered anyone. You can't even go into a club or pub, and there is someone looking for a reason to get violent. Luckily, I am not there anymore. Touch wood, apart from the terrible traffic users here in Cape Town, I have never made any enemies. On the other hand, it is really hard to make friends in this city as people keep to themselves. If you are a homebody, you won't be making any friends, not even with the neighbors. You really need to be a socialite to gain a few friends. People are also quick to judge around here. And the road users, mostly, can't drive and think the road belongs to them. They break most of the traffic rules. The human race, for you, hey. So intelligent, yet so naïve sometimes.

One example: I am a professional relationship counselor, and I have put it out there so many times how simple it is to maintain a fantastic relationship, and yet, people don't even take it seriously. I think it is because this ONE thing to do is very difficult. But if they only put it to the test religiously, all their relationships and friendships will change drastically.

Thank you.

Wow, that's crazy. Good on you for going to help the man, many people wouldn't. Obviously, others heard him, if someone called the cops, but you were the only one who went to be with him. That must have been comforting for him.

Thank you.

Wow, Kevin

Although the story is terrifying, you my have saved that man’s life! 👍

You Rock! 🤘

Thank you.

What an intense situation. I applaud your willingness to be a good Samaritan. While it could have been reckless we need more of this in our society,

Unfortunately being on the scene will require an investigation into any connection you may have with the victim. The police will need to check every lead, and it's possible the man might not be willing to be truthful as to what happened.

You obviously don't need to answer, but I'm really curious.

Was the man your neighbor, or a stranger to the neighborhood who somehow ended up at your neighbors driveway?

Was he still conscious when the police arrived to answer their questions as they waited on an ambulance?

Given how out of place this is based on your description, makes me wonder if the man was up to no good and was targeted specifically as opposed to a random happening.

You're incredibly fortunate the perpetrators weren't still in the vicinity, perhaps hunting him if the shooting occurred elsewhere and he had managed to make it that far before collapsing. I speculate the last part as you weren't startled awake by gunfire or a car speeding off, but his yells for help.

I'm glad you are alright, and cant stress enough how awesome I believe it is you went to go help.

Regards,

Jason

Thank you. Yeah, my instinct to help kicked in and I really didn't think about possible negative consequences. He was conscious when police arrived, and in fact the first two officers on scene rushed over to help the victim, but the third who showed up about a minute later rushed over to me and had me put my hands in the air while he patted me down, etc. He then asked me to "stay right there" while he went into the house to talk to the residents who lived there. This man apparently doesn't live there, and I heard him telling the officers that he was there "looking for his 14 year old cousin" whom he believed someone was "messing with". By that, I assume he meant his cousin is an underage female, and he believed she was in some kind of danger. He was shot in the back, basically on the lower right side. After the paramedics arrived, the officer that was attending to him came over to me and said that I could return home, if they had any further questions, they'd let me know.
There was a vehicle that was in the street when I came out, and the man was yelling at them to "Get the [F-Bomb] out of here!" He then told me he didn't know who they were, and they took off as soon as they saw the first police cruiser arriving. I didn't volunteer that information because, first the man said he didn't know who it was, and second, there wasn't much they could do about it at that point. I don't know who shot him, but he was lying outside the front door on the driveway of the house across the street from me, so it appears it happened either there or in the house, but I didn't see the police bring anyone out of the home and take them into custody.

Yikes! Sounds like he may have been shot elsewhere and made it to that place, which would explain why you didn't hear a shot.
