Google against the use of Article Directories
After seeing this fresh Google Webmaster video of Matt Cutts, I interpret it so that he discourages writing and posting articles on Article Directories as Street Articles etc.
Matt Cutts about Article Directories
Matt Cutts says that " In practice, it tend to be lower quality stuff and more and more spammy content". He says that it is not so effective to write and link to Article Directories as it was for a few years ago.

Very, very interesting. I believe I recall Kyle mentioning this too, but he was referring to SA's as a practice point for writing. Thoughts?
Soo. Do you just post your articles here at Wealthy Affiliate and no where else? How do you generate traffic? Is Google adsense, and pay per click your only recourse? I thought you had to get your name and product out into the world internet? I guess I am still to new at this internet business. Any thoughts from out there in WA land?.......Frank
I maintain a list of related sites that accept article submissions (not directories, but actual niche blogs), and accept them myself. Look for a submission link on related blogs or e-mail the owners to ask about doing so. If you can get something like this, it can mean A LOT for rankings.
Other than that, utilize forums, comments, social networks, etc. There is so much out there that can be really helpful.
Well, think about it. How often to you see article directories in your Google search results? He's right though, such things attract spam and probably won't help you site.
The best way to get backlinks for me has been to put comments in what I read and leave a signature clearly separated with an anchor link back to my site. For example.

Link to website
This works especially well with JavaScript based commenting systems like Disqus and LiveFyre. But in short, I agree that's it's a good idea to avoid even Street Articles.
Google are going for a pure, spam-free environment. Their aim is to provide a search engine which prioritises sites on the basis of relevance and content. With the linking methods we use here, sites like Street Articles will be as useful as they are only for as long as people use them to read articles. Google would prefer that the article was written directly on your website and that traffic were driven directly there. Kyle and Carson have always held that SA is good for a couple of articles but that your own site is best most of the time.
I thought it was ironic he said 'does that seen' when talking about lower quality writing. My take on what he is saying is it's better not to upload a low quality or spam content article ("an article like that") than him saying to not do it at all.

He is not saying that we not should link to the Article Directories but advises against doing so. I think the effects can still be good at using Article Directories, but as with anything must not be miss used.
There is also a difference in the Article Directories we use. Street articles are a high quality Article Directory with low spammy content.
Thanks for all the interesting comments!
