Organisation Is The Key - Dont Be Like Me!
A super quick post just to remind you all that organisation is the key, so please don’t be like me.
Why aren’t you organised then Kevin? Well ironically the answer is yes most of the time. Form my apprenticeship and all the way through my professional life I had to be organised. It was the nature of my job. But I didn’t mind as I am naturally a pretty organised person.
All my personal files are always dated and filed away in order and my office (all be it 15 years ago) was always super organised. Although I chose for many years to live with as little amount of "admin" as possible I was still always organised. In fact, I probably am a little OCD as I can’t even put notes back in to my wallet unless they are in order!
So with paper, files and day to day physical items I am super organised BUT..... why aren't I the same when it comes to my laptop?
I started to write a post for my niche site yesterday morning. I knew I had bookmarked a technical document and so I searched for it. I searched and searched and, well I think it must have been stolen.
Or could it be that over the past year or so since I have had the laptop I have bookmarked literally thousands of pages. Never stopping once to add them to folders, rename them or give them any sort of organisation.
So here I am 24hrs later still not having started my new blog post but having spent the last day going through hundreds if not thousands of bookmarks over 2 different browsers to give myself some sort of system.
Tomorrow I’m going to review my general documents and drobox files because the truth is its not pretty.
So why have I treated my virtual folders so differently to my physical ones? Honestly I’ve no idea, but the moral of the story is don’t be like me. Be organised, its better in the long run.

Hmmm ...... now I am thinking of all the things I have saved. It never occurred to me to put them in folders but it would make life easier.
Thank you Kevin, timely advice.
I can relate to that Kevin. Although my desk is a mess also, but I do know where everything is.

Good post and as for business, what I do off line, has an online folfer for it, in dropbox, much easier and better
Equally I have some stuff in Google Drafts as well in my inbox
Good idea Dave
This will force me to change my habits. Infact going to spend a few days setting up a better filing system, auto backups and looking at password storage etc.
I waste far to much tme chasing my tail and blaming it on the fact that i'm not a "techie" but thats really no excuse!

It is true that an organized desk allows to see more clearly in our mind. I love order, but we are not machines, we sometimes need a little let go without it becoming a habit and it turns into laziness. But you're absolutely right in the long run the organization is a safe bet!
Have a nice day!
