The Ugly Truth: First Impression Matters - The Gravity of a Great Visual Design
Do first impressions of your website matter? Absolutely. As a matter of fact, it matters a great deal! People make quick snap judgements of everything they see for the first time. It takes the brain 0.1 seconds to form a first impression about a person, and websites are no different. In fact, it takes about 0.05 seconds for users to form an opinion about your website that determines whether they like your website or not, whether they will stay (and read your content), or leave.
This first impression depends on many factors, such as - colors, spacing, structure, symmetry, amount of text, fonts and more.
A couple of things to keep in the back of your mind when designing your website:
- Invest time and energy in structuring your design. The design is what matters most for pulling users in.
- Make your web design simple and familiar.
- Positive first impression leads to longer visit duration.
- Great design gets visitors to trust you and stick around.
- If you are selling a dream (e.g. the idea of getting great abs) inspiring photography is the first impression creator.
- If the visitors like your website from the get go, they are probably ready to cut you some slack for any hiccups down the line.
So in a nutshell:
Visual appeal matters a lot. People form their opinion about your website in milliseconds. The very first second on your website is crucial and might matter more than all the other seconds that follow. Make sure that second counts.

Yes you are right first impressions do count. Customers are more likely to stay if they like the look of your website and information easy to fiind
This is so true Kenneth, first impression matters with everything we do in life and within the online world it is all we have going for us. We cannot defend our work or explain anything outside of what a visitor sees.
Because of this you should take into consideration your visitor experience with everything you do. Is the content effective and is there visual relevance within the first fold of the page that says "I am in the right place" to the visitor. If not you should refine.
Also, making use of the SiteFeedback platform is a brilliant way to get real eyes on your website and to be able to determine what aspects of your experience and first impressions that others have.
