After Panda and Penguin smartest people in this business are talking about some new things.They are talking about "earned media" and "engagement rate" and "market sentiment" and "view through conversions."

This is really cool!

Engagement rate = Is the ratio of how many fans, subscribers, followers actually take action on your messages. For example, take the average amount of clicks you get from your emails and divide it by how many subscribers you have then multiply that number by 100 to change it from a decimal to a percentage. That's your email engagement rate and its more important than your open rate or list size!

Next time you see a marketing guru with a big list of fans try calculating his engagement rate to see if he is the real deal or just buying fans... (10% is good)

Market sentiment = Its what the market thinks of you and your products. Stolen from the branding guys because of how powerful it is to know what the market says or thinks about you.

View Through Conversions = It's how many people see your ads and then buy BECAUSE in todays world they may see your FB ad but not click. Instead they might Google you and then subscribe to your blog and then one day see a friend tweet about you and now they buy. The FB ad was the spark that started it and was assisted by your SEO and blogging but a re-tweet landed the sale. You are branding yourself and people are following you.

With all this said, yes a conversion is always the end goal. However, it's not all that matters.
