Work where you work best

The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. ~Confucius

I used to work at my kitchen table. I got a lot done there. I wrote posts regularly for both Wealthy Affiliate and for a couple of my business websites.

There was a lot of sunlight at my kitchen table and a lot of fresh air through the open window directly to my left. It was very conducive to creative work.

Then it began to snow. And snow. And snow.

I moved into my living room. But in there it was dark and uncomfortable. My chair was too low and I had to reach up uncomfortably to reach my keyboard to type. Laptops are nice, but not when it is uncomfortable to use them in your lap or at a TV table.

My productivity waxed and waned and pretty much took a dive into an empty swimming pool for several months.

I posted very occasionally on Wealthy Affiliate and never on my business blogs.

Then came COVID-19. I had to work from home. It was a very good fit for me. I liked my new "office" up in our loft. There was a window for natural light and I used a small desk lamp to make my work space even brighter.

It took me a couple of months, but eventually I began to post more frequently on Wealthy Affiliate. I began to write a blog or two for my business sites.

As it got warmer and I could open the window again, it got even better. I could complete my "day job" work in a few hours a day and spend the rest of the time writing and helping my fellow WA family. I loved it. I was doing what I loved to do and I was falling in love with life again.

I wanted to spend more time with my family so I moved back to the kitchen table. It has been like heaven. I am in the midst of my loved ones and I can still get a ton of things done!

This has all led me to the conclusion that a person has to find a place to work that works for them. For me, it is in this bright space either at my loft office or the kitchen table.

If we are working in a place where our productivity fails, then we MUST find a different place to work.

I have found mine. Have you found yours? Where do you work that you find yourself most productive?

Have a great day, all!

You are right, Karin. Where you work is very important to productivity. I have a 3-room apartment, so the choices are limited. However, I live alone (with two cats) which leaves it up to me to carve out a work area. I found a large executive style desk at a used furniture store, and I already had an office chair- both fit nicely in a corner of my living room. The desk is large enough for my computer plus ample writing space, and that is my office.
It works well for me. I can work there all day without distraction.

Hi Barb. It sounds like you have a perfect place for you. Finding that place is great. It is the place we can go to build our dreams!

I hope all is well with you.

Yes Karin I have.
For me it is the dining room table,.
I have a comfortable Chesterfield office chair that I can use instead of the dining chair.
There are French doors that open onto the back garden for plenty of air, especially now in the summer.
The natural light isn't the best, but I have a desk light if I need it.
It is also where we film the YouTube videos.
I agree with you on this one.
Regards
Gaz

Wonderful, Gaz. Having comfort while we work is important, too.
I have a solid wood chair at the kitchen table. It isn't very comfortable, but for me that is perfect. If I get comfortable, I start to nod off. When I start to nod off, I lose all interest in doing anything! I would love to have French doors! In my dream home, they are located on my office (which is bright, sunny and has a hard chair and a kitchen table in it!).

Have a great day!

In the cave, my daughters word, I call it my office. Not very original, but it works well for me. Got everything I need. 32" TV, haven't turned it on for at least 4 years. Lazy Boy reclining dual sofa with drink and stuff caddy. Again, haven't used it much. Beautiful big window behind me, It's open everyday, weather permitting. Huge desk, big screen monitor, return to my left, laptop lives there. Various office accoutrements, mic, web cam etc. What more could a guy ask for?

I would love to be able to sit in the living room or kitchen, but the distraction of nature would steal my attention. Better off in a cave.

Thanks for the look into your world Karin.

Greg

Greg, it sounds like you have everything you need. The cave! I love it.

I think I do better with slight distraction. I can have the TV on, a 7 year old in one ear, the dog on my lap lunging at the kitten on my shoulder and still write a post or two!

I once took a test and did better while I was singing a song which had nothing to do with the test than I did when I tried with absolute silence. I guess I am weird like that!

Have a great day in the Cave!

I used to say that I did one thing, I did it very well, and then I moved on to the next task. So much for bluster. Thank goodness I can't see the snow falling in winter, I'd be mesmerized. I love snow, and if it builds, even a little, I'm off to make a snowman. Guess I'm still a kid at heart.

Greg

Excellent. I could relate with it.

Thanks, Florentino. I really missed working at my little kitchen table.
