Treating our business like a REAL business

I would add that you have to have all the right ingredients to start with! You can't substitute a lemon for an egg just because they resemble each other in shape and size!
With that in mind, I have decided to join our area Chamber of Commerce with my website business. I used to be the Executive Director for the Chamber and I know the benefits of joining one.
I believe that joining the Chamber will put it firmly in my mind that my website is a REAL business.
I'm very excited to join and have already spoken to the current director about it. She thinks it is a great idea.
With more and more business moving to an online presence, I think she sees this as a way to promote businesses in another direction. I will be the first wholly web-based business to join the local Chamber.
I have some BIG ideas that need a way to be realized and I think this will be a great way to do some of them. It will be a good first step anyway.
If we are keeping in mind that our websites are our businesses, then we have to treat them as such.
To me, that means joining the local Chamber or other commerce promotion group. That means keeping records. That means a lot of things that I don't know yet because I haven't ever run a business like this before. Having been a Chamber Director does give me some basic knowledge of what it takes, though.
Am I willing to do all that it takes? You bet I am.
I am more than willing to move out of my comfort zone to promote Wealthy Affiliate because I honestly believe in the lessons that I have learned here and continue to learn here.
It also means follow-through! I talked about that in another post the other day. It is one of the important building blocks of a business. We have to follow-through.
When I did MLM I did good during the initial contact, but I really failed at the follow-through. I seldom called the "prospect" back. I figured if they were interested, they would call me. That isn't how it works! WE have to be the ones to do the work.
Follow-through is just as important with our website businesses. If we have a newsletter, make sure to write it regularly! If people contact you with questions, answer them. If they post comments, even negative ones, answer them. Be a real person with a real business!

Very true we need to treat it as a real business, not a hobby. Especially if we expect others to see us as a real business.
That is why I think taking this step by joining a Chamber is an important one. I think it will solidify in other people's minds, too, that this is a real business, not just a hobby or a passing craze.

I have already discussed it with the current chamber director and she thinks it's a great idea. I guess we'll see! :)

Food for thought for sure Karin.
Back from 1989-2004, I was in outside sales with industrial maintenance products, business to business. I came to learn of the C of C through this and became friends with several throughout Arkansas and was able to get some referrals to businesses through them but never joined one as a member.
Please keep all of us informed as you progress with this.

Good idea, Karin. So is follow through. I believe that's one thing that the WA emails are good training for...to follow through, we have to go through all of them. Leaving a comment for all is a good idea too...gets us in the habit of answering comments when we get them on our website.
