World of Academics vs. The Real World

I’ve heard Kyle and Carson say a lot how what you get here
at WA is better than a $40,000 education. I know that some may scoff at that,
but as somebody who has a MBA, Bachelors, and an Associates I can understand
their assertion.

Over the last Century, we as a Nation have moved from
experience mattering most, to the mindset that you are looked down upon if you
do not have an advanced degree. For many today, an individual’s academic
pedigree determines the intelligence level and abilities of that person.

In truth, I have met many instructors with Doctorates that
should go back and see if anyone can teach them a course in common sense, but
that’s a completely different blog.

What you learn in a classroom usually has little to know
actual application when put to test in the real world. For example, when
completing my MBA I had to take over and run a failing business. Initial
investigation showed that I needed to first cut expenditures, one of which was
a huge grant to study green energy.

Well, sorry to those environmentalist’s here, but I am not
going to spend that until I can right the ship of my business and turn loss
into profit. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to cut that cost because the
computer program would have given me a failing grade. So, I instead had to cut
work force and reduce pay. Not something I would have done in the real world,
but what I had to do in the left leaning world of college.

Much of what is taught in College (Keynesian Economics,
Socialism, etc.) has always failed in the real world, but is taught as
successful in college classrooms. Why? Because many of the people teaching the
material have never had to survive in the real world, and therefore have no
experience to be teaching you the material in the first place.

That is where what you get here at WA is different. The
people helping us along have done this and have been successful. Their techniques
and training are based upon methods they use, or have used, to achieve real
results. That is why there is so much amazing information here at WA.

I am sure that there are many colleges that teach different
methods to building successful websites or online marketing campaigns. The
difference is that the methods being taught have never had to be put to the
test in the real marketplace, whereas the skills being learned here have.

Take the time to learn the material and how to apply it. We
all know success is not going to happen overnight. If it takes a bit longer to
get going than you thought, just remember you are building the foundation to
your new business with the support of a community that has achieved real world
success. The time and hard work you take now will be rewarded in the future.

If there were a class for common sense, people would ether test out of the class (they actually already posses it) or they would fail -it just cannot be taught! (maybe that only applies to adults, children seem to grow into it, or not!)

Jeff, I agree with your article. I worked in law. I am surprised that some attorneys could find their way to court. You may need some book smarts but common sense goes a long way. Putting practical training to use is great. That is what we do here at WA. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

Common sense isn't learned in college. They are there to fill the brains of students with the status quo.
To break out and become a critical thinker is typically contrary to what they teach.

Practical knowledge is a valuable asset and this is what we get here at WA.
It sounds like you were doing some of that with your real world example but were unable to test your options due to the constraints of the system.

What would the result look like if you had been able to cut the grant? Would the outcome have had better results? Sometimes the status quo isn't the best solution.

Jeff - great post I completely agree. There's a big-time knowledge gap in the academic world vs. the real world today. I am actually proud of my experience obtaining my MBA, but I am proud of my practical experience learning from mentors and meeting people with common goals...which is exactly what WA offers. When it came to the actual academic material, it was far behind the skills needed, especially in online marketing!

Thanks for the reply. I agree with the knowledge gap. Many professors have become so enshrined in the world of Academia that they really have no clue how the real world operates anymore. I too am proud of earning my MBA, but when push has come to shove in today's job market it is my military experience and real world work experience that is putting food on the table. Not my degree.

Jeff, this reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend the other day. We were discussing my son and his attendance in his post high school education. We basically came to the point that Schools are teaching you how to deal with "bull pucky" to put it nicely. My son was complaining about the basic math course he had to take, and we were comparing it to a "Boss" making you do menial things that didn't really matter, but he wanted them done.

This is why WA is better in that it teaches you how to be your own boss and how to work hard and do it the right way. Great post!

I couldn't agree more. I find it odd nobody says much about the cost of secondary education increasing even in an economy that is stale, to say it politely. Much of the "Core Classes" they call it, is just another way to soak more moeny out of you before you get on to classes that are acutally required for your major. While accounting helped during my MBA courses, college algebra was a one time course that I had to take and then forgot right after and have never used since.
