About JPetrie
Joined October 2016
Hi, my name is Jay and I live in Canada with my wife and 2 beautiful daughters. I've made a few attempts at starting an online business in the past, but without proper direction I couldn't seem to get any traction.
We don't know what we don't know... and now that I call WA home and have met and learned so much from the training and people here... I now know, I didn't know much back then.
I wish I had found WA sooner. As my daughters have grown up my job has taken me out of town, sometimes 80% of the time. It's all I can do now to catch up and earn an income from home so I don't miss anymore of their childhood.

I can identify with what you said in your profile. Especially the part about "proper direction" and "we don't know, what we don't know." That is so true!
I attempted building a business a number of times - I can't even count them. But the important thing is to try again. Earning an income from home - or anywhere, just makes sense to me. This time I'm learning more and taking action (specific steps). I am so busy with my children and my husband has 3 jobs, but I cannot let that stop me.
Here's to your success!

Hello Jay,♫Welcome! Nice to meet you ツ I wish you a lot of learning pleasure and fun on WA. Thank you for adding me to your network.

From the start, I have written training for every issue I had problems with myself. I made an addition for After The Walkthrough. Also a list of 1001 niche ideas, a checklist with 25 points to go through before you publish a post, 101 blogging ideas when you get stuck and an A-Z WA dictionary. I just love lists:) It has been very helpful to a lot of people. I have listed them in one blog you can find on my profile. It's the first website link right under “Follow me on” (click on my picture to get there). I hope to help you with those.

If you have any questions, please reply to this message or leave a comment on my profile.
Success building your business in 2017. See you around, Greetings Loes

Hi Anita, yes... things are going great here at WA for me.

It was a little frustrating in the beginning for sure, as I wanted to be where others were right away. And for me at least, I'm always anxious to get to that next stage.

At first, it's getting noticed in Google. Then that happens, but it's not on page ONE. Finally, you start seeing some first-page rankings and traffic is coming to your website... you're excited, but no one is clicking on your links.

Then they are clicking on your links... but not purchasing anything.

LOL. It's all normal, and it's a just a learning process.

So if you ever feel discouraged along the way, it's normal.

I had some experience before joining WA though so my journey here may be a little different than others. A lot of the training I was able to get through quickly, and a lot of it I haven't gone through 100% (I've picked through in a non-linear way) because I already have experience with this or that.

If it's all new to you, though, I highly recommend just going through it step-by-step. It's laid out very well, and Kyle does a great job of explaining everything. And of course, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

My situation may (or may not) be unique in that I jumped into this with both feet and I've never bothered to come up for air. My experience prior to WA, was just dabbling in internet marketing because I was trying to figure it out on my own. Wealthy Affiliate filled in all the information and community gaps for me, and put things in coherent package. That's what made the difference for my situation.

But , I really enjoy affiliate marketing (in the way someone might enjoy watching sports). So, now, even when I'm not sitting at my computer; I'm listening to podcasts (about internet marketing) while I'm driving, or walking through the grocery store and so on.

When I'm eating, I'll usually be reading about internet marketing, or watching one of the WA live training recordings.

I don't know if others go at it like that, nor should they. It just happens that I also like it, so why not take every chance I can to learn something new.

Anyway, that probably answers your question (and a whole lot more).
Have a great day, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

Jay

Ok. How about skin care for women over 40? I like this one!

So, here are some random searches. It's important to note that Google doesn't care too much anymore about "exact match" keywords.

For example, if you search Google for, "how to restore skin elasticity" you will get first page results with things like;

-Restore Skin Elasticity Naturally With Coconut Oil,
-Can the Skin's Elasticity Be Restored?,
-How to Restore Collagen in Skin Naturally

Years ago, Google would take your exact match title/keyword and you could outrank these other titles. However, today... Google is less concerned with the exact match words and instead understands what the searcher is looking for. These other articles are just as relevant even though the keyword is not an exact match.

So you have to be careful of this. Early on, I wrote articles with exact match keywords and just got frustrated when they ended up on page 10 or 20. Every variation of the keyword would result in the same top 10 websites on page 1.

As you follow the training you will learn about long tail keywords. A good example here is the title "Restore Skin Elasticity Naturally With Coconut Oil"
By introducing Coconut Oil to the keyword, you will have far fewer searches... but a much better chance now of getting on page 1.

This is why product names, brands, etc. are what you want to look for.

Another example would be "How To Restore Skin Elasticity (Under the chin)"

You will get the hang of it. It's just a matter of playing with the keyword tool, but Kyle explains some great techniques like the alphabet soup method to help you out.

A new tool I just signed up for is called "Question Samurai". It's by the same company that make Content Samurai. I'm not sure what the regular price is, but they sent me an email link to sign up for just one dollar.

It's mainly to give you ideas for YouTube Keywords but it has Google on there is well. It's not much different than the Google Suggest drop down menu that comes up when you type a search into Google, but you type in your keywords and it gives you long list of questions that are also being searched.

It's just a good brainstorming tool.

Anyway, there's some food to chew on :-D Let me know if I you have any more questinos.

Here's a great post that just popped up in my email from Louisab a few minutes ago I thought it seemed relevant to niche selection and keywords. As she mentioned, you really have to go in with the approach of helping others first, providing value and sales come later. But I won't steal her thunder lol. You can read the article :-D

Hello JPetrie,
What do you think about " How to make natural cleaning products" as a niche?
Reply
JPetrie Premium
sounds interesting, I'll do some keyword research and see what it looks like.
Reply
JPetrie Premium
Hi Cindy,
So it looks like the topic has a decent amount of average monthly searches (5989 on the attached screenshot). And, it's a niche that will likely grow in popularity so that's good.

It looks like some good opportunity for reviews as well. You can see that the QSR (competition) is relatively low.

Now, that just for generic searches.

Targeted keywords are used to write about specific products, brands, ingredients etc.

Also, specific purposes.

For example "Will Lemon Juice Clean a Bath Tub?"
Then you can drill down farther, "Will Lemon Juice Clean Ceramic Bath Tub?"

(I haven't checked those keywords, but a lot of research is just plugging stuff in until you find something. I'll usually spend a couple hour a week doing that and compiling a spreadsheet.)

When considering the future growth of your website, the other marketing channels look good as well.

I think there's a lot of potential for this niche on social platforms, such as Pinterest and Facebook. Your target audience will most likely be active on those networks.

If you're into making videos, YouTube is a goldmine and your niche would make a good demonstration type channel. Sometimes it's hard to rank for something on Google, but there is very little competition on YouTube. So you can use the traffic you get from people searching YouTube and send them to your site for recipe/cleaning solution ingredients, downloadable pdf's etc.

"How-To" posts are among the most popular.

I definitely think there is some potential here.
Reply
JPetrie Premium
Here's just some random searches, and I've pointed out some of the keywords I would go after. I'm not familiar with the niche so not sure exactly what products you may be targeting.

Once you do your keyword research, before write your article, you'll want to do what's called SERP research. SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page.

You may have what seems like a great keyword, but if the first 2 pages of Google are dominated by high authority sites like goodhousekeeping.com for example, then that keyword might not be as good as it seemed.

In time your site will gain authority and you will be able to rank in the mix, but starting out is all about picking the low hanging fruit as Kyle says.

Hi Jay, Mike here from http://avoidonlinemarketingscams.com,

I am so happy you made the decision to take advantage of this opportunity. If you are determined and can stick with your training here at WA it can open the door to an exciting and rewarding future as it has for me. This is where your online business is going to be realized. Here's the course that started me down the road to an unbelievable lifestyle and one that is now within your reach. From this point on you will have not only my support in person but the ability to ask any questions of the community here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Without wasting too much time you can now access the Online Entrepreneur level 1 online course found in the main menu by clicking the green "Get Started Here" button.

Here's the link to lesson 1: This is the course that I started with and lead me to my first sale online!

If you are willing to put in an honest effort and take the bull by the horns I will personally help you through the course or with any questions or concerns you may have in your quest to make your online business a reality.

I can be reached through my personal profile at any time when you have any questions...trust me, you will!

Oh! Lesson 3 "Finding A Niche" for many is the most challenging to get through without pulling out your hair and the occasional temper tantrum so I have created some extra material that I feel will be of huge benefit to you while working through this lesson, let me know when you are there and I will give you if you upon request.

Don't forget to create your personal profile by adding an image and a few words about yourself! You will find many WA members come offering their help and asking you to follow them which is a great resource for you to have access too, many members here have a wealth of knowledge that you can tap into.

Just a quick heads up! You can just do the course and that's it or you can take advantage of a discount on a premium membership here at WA. There is absolutely no pressure to change your status, but if you decide to become a Premium member and unlock absolutely everything Wealthy Affiliate has to offer and do so before your 7 day course is over you will qualify for a 50% discount on the first month of your membership.

I look forward to getting to know you and being able to help out when you have questions.

Cheers, Mike

Hi Jay just finished replying to you on my site, my two fingers are hurting, lol. Glad to have a potential Islander on board. There's so much crap out there it's hard to find the good ones amongst all of the you know what.
You won't find too much BS here, kind of a meat and potato outfit. Keep it basic, you have access to a keyword tool here that's all you will need, don't buy any tools or plugins, you don't need them. There are many here that are like a spring salmon chasing a lure and will tell you that this is needed and that but you don't want to get caught up in that.
Remember two things you want to accomplish here:
1) build a website
2) add content
Pretty simple for some, pretty hard for others!
The course you will be taking is pretty straight forward, pretty basic but it will make sure you have a really solid foundation, if you find it to simple for you because of your experience level have a look at WA's bootcamp, you don't have to sell WA just use that format and instruction for your own niche, works well!
Talk soon Mike.

Hi Mike,
Really appreciate the quick response on your site. I was going to reply there, but figured I might as well move the conversation into this forum. I had to smile at your description of the ferry ride. We were there for a couple weeks this past July and every time I'm on the ocean... or just near it, the smell awakens something primal so to speak. Hard to describe. The scenery also never gets old. I still have vivid memories of first moving to Nanaimo in the early 90's to take Business at Malaspina. I've been trying to find a path back ever since. We have friends that live there, my Mom was there for 5 or 6 years (before we had kids) and my father-in-law used to live there. It also used to be my sales territory when I was living on the mainland so I've spent a great deal of time there... but haven't been able to call it home yet.
Back to the business of things... my current site is definitely a labour of love, but I'm not sure it's the best project for me to begin with. I'm definitely not going to shelve anything, and from what I've learned recently here I can definitely visualize an eventually direction to monetize it. But it would be great if you had a look. Not sure if I should post a link here, or private message. Let me know.
I like that you believe in keeping it simple. I've actually put a lot of effort into making my site clean and minimal. I always joke that if I was single with no kids I'd live in a one room condo with Japanese style walls and only a pillow in the middle.
I have a new logo/banner that I haven't posted on my site yet so pay no attention to the current one.
As far as niche's go... I may be the oddball here. I had no difficulty coming up with one and as I tend to jot down ideas throughout my day I have nearly 3 dozen ideas for individual posts with product tie-ins. Having built my other site though... I also know the effort involved to turn those ideas into content. But having this support and community, with a definitive path is something I've never had before. So plugging away at it with a "road map" to follow is something quite different from putting in hours without direction... or even a destination for that matter.
Like I said on your site. I'm not in a rush. That's not to say I'm only here to tinker once in awhile without a goal... I just mean, I have no problem putting in months of effort building a foundation before I see results.
I am starting to come up with some questions, and I'd like to go over my niche idea with you before I build my site. Not sure of the forum "etiquette" here. Should those discussions be moved to private messages (I'm not even sure if that's an option here). I'm about to watch the building your site video right now... but I want to say again, a huge thanks for all your help. I know your time is valuable and can't express my appreciation enough.

Regards,
Jay

I'm ready to get started in my WA site but hoping to get your advice regarding domain choice. I was planning on using a "brand" domain but reading some of the blogs here I think I've been convinced to go with a keyword domain. Should I be using something like Jaaxy to drill down on something specific?
Thanks.

Hey Jay I looked at your site and it looks great. Personally I think your message would be supported with environmentally sensitive products. I could easily tie in say solar products, environmentally sensitive cleaners for example. I did a quick keyword search on topics like solar lighting and dyi solar kits and the results were very good, a fair amount of traffic and not much competition.
I am not sure if you are familiar with keyword tools but they are a must, wa has one here that you can use.
The green means there is low competition which is under the heading QSR anything under 200 is good.
You could write reviews on products and supplement that with environmentally charged posts I think this fits well with your websites theme, "Evolve" is a great name and could easily include moving into more eco friendly products.
Your site needs nothing it is very nicely laid out, very easy to navigate, not cluttered, it could be a force for sure.
Here are some keyword screenshots, look at the data and let me know what you think. Having an electrical background you could do even the smallest reviews on say lightbulbs, your site could really branch out in many sub niches of the whole environmentally friendly broad niche.
Only one downside for the future, always go with a .com they carry more weight with Google and if someone buys your version with a .com can cause some issues down the road, no biggie though. Here's the screen shots attached....
Reply
MikeLambert Premium
I know you thought I was smoking something when I mentioned light bulbs but look at this screen shot, ton of green, could be good!
Reply
JPetrie Premium
Well, you've definitely given me something to think about. It never occurred to me that someone could end buying the .com version. It seems a little presumptuous to be worried about it at this stage of the game, but it does concern me looking out years ahead. Primarily because the site could branch out in so many directions. It's original purpose was personal development. How do we adapt to the accelerating pace of change, and the unprecedented number of global issues (economic, technological, environmental). It covers why we need to change, but more importantly... how we can change. Ironically... starting an online business is one way to insulate ourselves from the economic effects of these changes (a potential way to promote WA)

Having said that, I'm not out to reinvent the wheel either. Light bulbs are a good idea and they don't stray from my message.

At the risk of losing focus, I can see a multitude of different avenues all connected to my site. It's all about how we can (and maybe should) change.
Light bulbs and environmental products fit into that.
Diversifying our income is another.
Taking better care of our health so we can adapt more effectively to change and uncertainty (of course health leads down many roads... One of them being my original niche idea... improving the quality of our SLEEP)

Sleep opens up doors to pillows, linens, mattresses, mattress toppers and covers, black out curtains and Sleep Masks, and so on. It could cover a narrow and targeted line of supplements.

Sorry to get off on a tangent. There are other directions I can go here... but my question is,

It will take months... years maybe to grow this site in all those directions which I'd like to do. But I'm concerned about having all my eggs in one basket. Would several smaller sites be more effective and durable in the long run?

Of course either way... my immediate goal is to focus on one small area (like light bulbs) and start growing my site.

Sorry for all the rambling and questions. I just want to get it right from the start so I don't end up wasting a lot of time down the road.

Thanks

You're not rambling Jay just thinking out loud. This believe it or not is a common issue that many have. I won't call it a problem per say but it can be if it leads to in action or going to broad.
When you are content marketing you never want to spread yourself thin. Google rewards authoritative websites with high rankings which means traffic and you guessed eventually sales. When you spread yourself out with multiple sites or go to broad with your website you just scratch topics, you don't become the authority you should be because you are bouncing from topic to topic. I never move to another topic on my site until I feel I have captured Google's attention and there premium rankings, only then do I start to branch out.
The light bulb idea is just one small niche to give you an idea where that site could "evolve" to, same as solar, environmentally sensitive cleaners and so on.
Sleep deprivation is a huge health concern and affects many people but it is a niche that you have to find products that people will buy online, I did a jaaxy search and masks on it's own looks very promising.
I have attached a screenshot of sleep apnea masks, good traffic, virtually no competition. You could write post on effects of sleep deprivation, helpful tips on easing the effects, treatments and reviews of sleep apnea masks and other related products.
I feel you have a good one here Jay, let me know what your thoughts are.
Also if your friend wants my help I talked to Carson and if your friend gives me his name and username he can be flipped over to me if he signed up through WA's home site, totally up to your friend it just means he gets linked to me and works with me thats all.
I may be putting words in your mouth by narrowing it down to sleep apnea Jay, but I am talking from experience on this. Most people who fail go to broad with their niche selection and don't capture Google's attention, you only need to be the go to guy with one small su niche to make a great living online.
It's tempting to want to cover all the bases but that's not how IM works, you want to own a niche, you want to own that traffic, remember, keep it simple.
Let me know your thoughts and lets get started.
informational posts
reviews on any products sleep apnea related, masks, pillows, treatments, ear plugs, you name it, you will be the sleep apnea go to guy, that's your goal!

Thanks, I think I'm clear now. I'd like to build out my current site so it's authoritative within it's niche... which for now I'm painting with a broad brush with all the areas I'd like to cover.

However, within each sub-niche I can still expand and become the authority on that topic... one at a time. Particularly if the product is relatively obscure. If few people are tackling a topic, I could probably be pretty thorough and competitive with just a handful of decent posts. Is that correct?

I spoke with my friend. When he Googled Wealthy Affiliates it looks like he just clicked a random link and followed that path to sign up... so he ended up joining under someone else. Sorry about that. I was trying to get you another referral, plus I know he could really benefit from your help.

When we get our premium membership, WA only covers the hosting, not the domain purchase and cost. Is that correct? I'm researching now how to change my domain, which doesn't sound too difficult since I don't have a ton of redirects or traffic yet.

Once I get that done I'd like to move it into WA.

Am I on the correct path with that?

Thanks

Absolutely Jay I love your site like I said before, even mentioned it to my wife, the name is awesome and I think you really have a good start and I feel you have a great theme going.
You are exactly right, build out every sub niche topic to it's fullest. In most cases it takes 15-20 posts to get Googles attention and after that it depends on your competition in that niche. So you need to start with one topic and explore as many tangents of that topic expressing your thoughts in roughly 1000 words, don't get to carried away, you will lose your audience but you need enough words to get a clear message across to your readers.
Let me know what your first post topic and post title will be and I will run it through my keyword tool and check for optimization.
Yes you need to buy your domain, hosting comes with your membership, plus WA backs your site up daily and has unreal security with their hosting which is great.
ps appreciate the referral try, have a good one, just writing an article to publish tomorrow so I had better get back to work.
