I want to learn affiliate marketing, and build a successful online business. - Mar 2017

Hey there,

My name is Jude and I started out with Wealthy Affiliate in March 2017. I was motivated to start an online business because of corporate and the daily commuting fatigue. I work in the Executive Search targeting manufacturing industry and the food ecosystem. I enjoy connecting people to their passions (jobs) but with ever-increasing economic volatility, it is difficult to mention job and security within the same sentence.

# My venture into online business #
After some online research, I stumbled across Wealthy Affiliate and the reviews were very positive. I didn't hesitate much to join the community and shortly, I signed up to be a Premium member as I didn't want to just skim the surface.

Alas...I fell prey to what I later learnt to be the Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS) and it distracted me from what I started out trying to achieve in WA. I was looking at Amazon selling, Drop shipping, Kindle publishing etc. and the more I researched, I discovered I was spending more time researching than TAKING ACTION. It put me into a spiral of analysis paralysis and I shared this in a blog post on my website to help others avoid what I went through. 6 months is a large chunk of time to be wasted roaming around. :(

For now, it is back to basics, staying focused with WA and DOING JUST ONE THING RIGHT - Learning and Executing. All businesses take time and I'm sure this is true for WA.

I am happy to connect and learn from you all, not just how to create a business (though that's the core theme here) but also about your experiences and stories around the globe.

I left my social media handles, email and contact details below. Open to connect and currently I ran two websites, one of which I co-founded with my wife who is a recent convert for affiliate marketing. :)

Jude,

I totally understand what you mean by Shiny button Syndrome! I went through for years and wasted a lot of money too.

Now to save time, I write down everything to do with my sites and what I should accomplish each day.

I have a 1 hour break each day

Life is easier now that I am working my plan.
To Your Success!

Hi Jude,

Thanks bro..nice to meet you at WA. I know as i too can relate with your experience, over the years I lost thousands in scam offers, wasting my time and money with programmes that didn't really give me the desired results.

Hope the coming weeks and months bring us some positive results and rewarding outcomes. Have a wonderful day and the week ahead..cheers!

Hi Jude, Thanks for the link to your article on child themes. I'm not sure if you can self promote in WA, but I appreciate the link. I did read it and checked into Genesis. They were one of the companies I looked at, but after paying $39 for a theme that didn't work for me, I thought $99 was a bit much for something that may not get used. However, after looking at the lifetime cost of Divi, $99 doesn't look too bad. Of course, divi sucks you in with the one time fee which looks tempting, but I'm not that tempted. Plus I have heard people say it isn't easy to work with.

A question about Genesis. Do you need the design palette pro? I thought making customizations were part of having a premium theme? I just didn't quite understand it. Can you enlighten me?

Hi Shelley,

Thanks for the gentle reminder on self promote. I have to be careful with that. Indeed, cost was an issue and I went for Genesis after considering the lifetime cost.

I have not used Design Palette Pro and thus unable to advise you much. I read somewhere when I was researching it...that it is for more advanced customisations...The basic premium theme (without the Design Palette Pro) is already sufficient for my use.

Thanks Jude. The design palette is probably more than I will need also. If I decide on genesis I will use your link.

Thanks! I spent quite a bit of time on trying to find the right theme but frankly, there is always something 'better' out there. Eventually, I decided to just get a premium theme that fits my taste (and budget) and focus on content and marketing.

All the best for your Theme search! Thrive Themes (I didn't look into it) seems interesting and I think some members are using it. You can dive deeper into it if you haven't already.

Hi Jude, wow! you hit the nail on the head. I got lost looking for a profitable niche and all the other possibility's and lost track of why I started WA in the first place. I have got to get back to defining my niche. I hope you don't mind me following you.
Take care,I wish you all the best with your success!

Hey Madek,

Thanks for the follow too. I just added you on G+. I like your website for its content but the sidebar colour scheme makes the words difficult to see. Not sure if you may want to play around with other background colours for your sidebar, to give the links there better visibility.

Cheers,

Jude

Hi Jude,
Interesting that I went through the same analysis paralysis that you did. Now it's full steam ahead. It's way more work than anticipated but so enjoyable. When I get stuck on one site, I go to my second and work until the answers are received for the first one. It actually works pretty well. It tends to relax the frustration when you get stuck on a site building problem. Kind of fun too.
Best to you

Hi Dan,
Glad you are on full steam. I agree that it is really way more work than what I thought but I am learning and it gives me a sense of achievement as I progress step by step. I have only one site for now but is thinking of starting another. :)

Hi, thanks for the follow; following right back! Like you, I first dropped into the site around March, but was quickly spirited away by more pressing things. I only purchased a Premium subscription a few weeks ago, so I really do feel like I'm at the beginning of it all again.

My ability to leap forward through the course has also been a little slowed by waiting for academic approvals for research, which you might have noticed is the whole point of my building a site. But I try to make good use of my time while I wait, by writing articles to file away for publishing.

Now, when you say you want to end the commute, just how long a commute are you talking about? And is it by car, or public transport? :)

Hey Ivy,

Thanks for the follow and sharing about your WA journey. I joined in March too but was too distracted to do anything meaningful until Sep. Went through the Affiliate Bootcamp diligently and had to admit I wish I did that earlier.

I live in cities like Singapore, Hong Kong. With the traffic jam (which occurs daily without fail), it takes 2-3 hours to and fro. In Hong Kong, I drive but it doesn't help much as the road is just packed. :( I try to maximise my time by listening to podcasts since I am trapped behind the wheel.

That's why I named my website BYTE (BYE) to Daily Commute. The abbreviated version is BYTETODC.

Happy to share and all the best for your PhD. :)

That's such a lengthy commute by car! Your car's gear-box must really get a work out.

Oh, Hong Kong - I haven't visited since I was a teenager, that was before the handover (yes, it's been that long). I loved it so much - I was staying at a hotel near Victoria Park, and it was right before the Lunar New Year. I'd never experienced anything like it! I didn't speak any Cantonese, but recall that people everywhere were very helpful. I still can't speak Cantonese (just a very bad conversational Mandarin with AWFUL tones), but I like to think the same friendliness would still be waiting for me!

:) The distance isn't that far. Just that we can have a 1 km road that is jammed for 30-45 mins at peak hour.

Glad you enjoyed Hong Kong. I don't speak much Cantonese either but I agree people here are still quite friendly despite my handicap in the language.

Lengthy - in terms of wait is what I meant! Our distances are grand in Australia, but I seldom have any delays on the highways. And I don't deal with peak hour traffic of the kind Sydney and Melbourne complain about... :)

I recall driving around Europe (I used to perform classical music professionally and had many concerts to drive to), how people would be surprised at how easy going Australians were about the driving. It seemed too long a drive for them. But it was so short and easy, compared to what we knew! Several countries in a day? No worries.

Australia is such a large country (continent I would say) and driving for long distances should be a norm for you.
Speaking of which, I am visiting Sydney in Dec with my family. First visit to Australia for myself. :)

Hello Joo ... thank you for the follow. I wonder if the current job market and job security have become a contemporary oxymoron? There certainly has been a paradigm shift over the last 40 years, exacerbated by the financial and RE market melt down that started in 2006.

For sure SOS will detract from a goal of achieving a prosperous online business in 6 months. There just too much to learn and it very likely is going to take you more than 6 months.

But you are in the best place you could possibly be to make it happen as long as you can be patient, persistent, and dedicated to learning and doing here at WA.
Reply
JooKwang Premium
I couldn't agree more about SOS. It is highly distracting (but then discipline is my onus) gives a false sense of hope, gobbling up time which should be used for more productive activities. Today I am just focused on WA and that singular focus makes the process much more enjoyable! :)

The job market is also a primary reason for me trying to start an online business. It is not easy staying employed long-term and people I know are let off after 17-20 years of dedicated service to their company, industry. The turnaround for senior positions is also getting shorter as companies waste no time to evaluate their ability to turn things around.

NWTDennis Premium
It kind of sad, but true. Hard work, dedication, and company loyalty don't mean a thing these days. The old paradigm is gone.

It's not easy to be your own boss, but you are in the best place you can be to make that a reality.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Kyle,

You read my mind! I am stumped at the website creation stage, because I can't figure out what is my niche. It seems that for it to be my niche, it has to be something I already do/own/am using etc.
I am interested in bicycles actually but the irony is that I don't own one of these and a quick check on the web seems to indicate that there aren't that many affiliate programs associated with bicycles. Maybe I am wrong, and just need to dig deeper. :)
What do you think?

A niche can honestly be anything, what are you passionate about? What are you interested in?

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

PS. There are 10,000's of products/services that you can promote online relating to affiliate programs, never worry about there being a lack of products/services to promote.

Hey man, you're in a great place to learn the business of affiliate marketing! If you can commit to the three hours a day you mentioned in your goals and commit to following the training here at WA I have no doubts you'll be on your way to earning your first dollar by month six, if not sooner!

Hey Jk! Welcome to WA! I'm so glad you decided to create your free starter membership! I'm guessing you came here through my website, http://KirbysMarketing.com. Just in case you didn't, I will introduce myself again!

My name is Dustin! I have been a member here at Wealthy Affiliate since June 2013. Unfortunately, I got off to a slow start and didn't really dive in until a few months later. However, since I made that decision to dedicate time and energy to absorbing all of the information WA has to offer, the results have been tremendous! I am now getting thousands of visitors to my website a month and am actually turning a profit!

I'm more than willing to pass on what I have learned and look forward to learning a lot from you! So, if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to shoot them my way.

Since you are a brand new member, I would suggest you get started by heading over to the "Online Entrepreneur Certification - Getting Started" course. It is located on the top of the left-hand sidebar where it says "Get Started Here". Or you can simply click on the link below: It would also be really great if you would finish setting up your profile so we can get to know you a little better! All you need to do is upload a profile picture (can be anything) and write a brief description about yourself! Watch the video in the link below if you need some guidance to do this: Go ahead and dive in! I'm sure you will feel completely overwhelmed at first...but that's a beautiful thing. All you have to do is ask and you will find your answers!

Peace!
Dustin

P.S. Make sure you click the reply button below and say hi so I know you made it OK!

Hello Dustin,
Thanks for the email. That's what I am doing right now and I am very amazed by the clarity of the videos here. And by that, I am not just referring to their screen resolution but the contents, it offers a newbie like myself very clear steps for getting it right from the start.

Taking my time to absorb the information here.

Cheers!
