Keeping going by remembering how far you've come.

Hi Everyone,

I remember in the early days of my WA membership reading a comment (I'm sure it was in a post by Kyle) that said the 'only way you can fail at affiliate marketing is by giving up'.

That's always stuck with me.

I'm sure everyone will have, probably on many occasions, been frustrated about not making progress as quickly as we'd hoped, or maybe getting bogged down with trying to sort something fiddly with our websites or whatever else has gotten in the way of the success we desire.

At these points it's very easy to feel that giving up is the best thing to do. We feel like we'll never get there, its too difficult, it's just not going to happen, we're wasting our time.

For me, I find analogies are a great way of looking at things in a different way - so I've been trying to think of one that would fit this situation and hopefully thinking about such an analogy may help others to keep going.

Here's my best effort at a suitable analogy (if you can think of a better one, please feel free to share!)

Imagine your stuck on a river bank and you really want to get to the other side of the river. The river is way too long to walk around, too deep to wade through, but you really, really want to get to the other side.

So you need a plan.

What about building a raft? That'll work!

You've heard and seen others build rafts before to get across different rivers, so why can't you do the same?

The thing is, you've never built a raft before. But your determined to get to the other side of the river.

OK, so you need some wood, some rope to tie the wood together, some sort of paddle.

Maybe you start with trying to get some wood.

Perhaps there's some smallish trees nearby that you could use..

Not entirely sure where the rope comes from though? (ok, I agree there's some holes in the plot line here, but hopefully the idea comes across!!).

The point is, you start building your raft.

It's not going to be easy to build this raft, and often you take some steps backwards and you hit hurdles, but you keep going and at some point you have something looking like raft.

It might not be the best raft in the world and you still haven't crossed the river, BUT when you compare where you are NOW, standing there with your raft, to when you were just sitting on the bank with nothing, you've made huge leaps forward in achieving your goal.

AND the position that you're in now is way further forward than the hundreds of other people who also want to cross the river, but they're still just sitting on the bank doing nothing.

My point, if I'm making any sense, is that if we focus purely on our end goal, whether that's crossing the river or earning what we want to earn from an affiliate website, it can often seem too far away and unobtainable, even when we are making great progress towards our goal.

It's so important to remember that every piece of training you complete, no matter how small the thing is that you may have learned, you are further down the track than when you started.

When we start at WA, most of us probably have no idea how to use Wordpress or know anything about niches or keywords or any of the other powerful things we learn, so when we start to understand these things, even if it takes time, that's our rafts starting to take shape.

So be proud of your raft and remember if you are going through a patch where you feel disheartened, I suggest this..

Try to remember what you knew (or should that be didn't know) when you first started your WA journey and compare that to what you know now. I'm sure you'll find you've made huge leaps forward and hopefully, when you recognise your progress and understand just how far you've come, that'll renew your positivity.

I hope that makes sense and if the above helps just one person feel motivated again, that would make me very happy!

Best wishes

John

Very welcome Mel

Hey John,

Thanks for the great post. Actually, I started here 2 years ago and when Covid hit everything kind of took a back seat. I’m finally getting back on and trying to get active. My site is getting decent traffic despite the lack of work on it.

Your blog is just what I needed to keep me going back down this road. I’m working in SEO for a major university so I know the power of it but I just need to apply it to my own site.

Keep up the good work,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for reading my blog.

I hope you achieve all of your goals very soon.

Best wishes
John
