Why retract the landing gear?

It cleans up the airplane.

• Stops the "drag" and makes the air flow more smoothly over the wings.
• Allows the airplane to reach much higher airspeed.

Look at the difference!

Older airplanes did not have retractable landing gear. Gear stayed down all the time. Speeds were limited until retractable landing was invented.
