Jamie, your plans sound wonderful! There are so many of us looking for information on the kinds of things you are looking at. Best to you! :-)

My two niches are pretty small and probably won't be able to generate much income from them. BUT, they are two things I love to write about and they are giving me good practice for when I do go into more "business" mode as opposed to training and learning mode.

HI, jlynnbass! From someone still trying to get a handle on my niche, this immensely important post from Steve"I've Tried That" might help you:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/if-i-were-to-start-a-new-site

He mentions both tight "niche" sites, and "authority sites".

I'm no expert on this, but seeing what's online, you appear to be aiming for an authority site on "prepping, survivalist" stuff. I could be wrong?

Thank you so much for sharing! I love Steve, lol. As far as survivalist stuff, um.....not so much. I find that kind of thing fascinating, but I more want to focus on ways that I've found (or am trying to find) to get away from very common (but not very healthy) things like eating high volumes of processed foods, using "health and beauty" products that are full of unpronounceable and/or disgusting ingredients, etc. It's not running off into the woods like Survivor Man, it's living in a more simple, mindful, natural way.

The root to your answer of broad vs. narrow niches is truly only answered by key word research. A free research tool I like is....ubersuggest.org......you put in a word or phase and it will kick out all kinds of relative words and phrases. I also go to Bingads.com...set up a free account....and click on tools, and use their free keyword tool. It gives you the popularity of the words and phrases, and also what CPC = cost per click is, and click through rate and a bunch of other stats. As I am going I use word processor and spread sheets to group key words. Then I use them as work sheets to plug words into Jaaxy keyword tool, and find tune even further these keywords especially knowing how much competition there is going to be, and as I am doing all this I am checking availability of domain name availability with .com. You will find the Broad...has a lot of spin offs that will work for you.....and the narrow....hey there might not be that much market there, and you might want to prioritize your time on another niche that you like that has a little more market Umph to it. I would say the key to all of this is.....You have a great passion for what you want to accomplish, don't lose any of this passion....Just fine tune it!!!!!

WOW! Hahaha, the first time I read your comment, I felt like half of it was in a different language, but I understood it all my second time through. :) SO much of the terminology that we use during this process is so new to me (I actually have a culinary arts and hospitality background) that it definitely takes me a minute to grasp some things. That's all very useful advice, though. Thanks!

I would say the best way to have a SEO site is to focus on one of the topics you mentioned. However, it sounds like you are passionate about the whole idea of natural living and I think you should start there and write multiple articles about the different topics you mentioned.

It may seem like you are taking on too many topics at once since you need to find out what key words work best for each, but I believe in getting all your ideas down in writing and then making adjustments if you need to.

Worst case - if you find multiple topics within one site isn't getting good search results, you can narrow down your topics and refine your site. You can always break out the topics into multiple sites later if you feel this broad idea isn't working (e.g. one site dedicated to reducing waste, one site about alternatives to junk foods, etc...)

Good luck either way!

-Tom

Thank you so much! I definitely have plenty of ideas on paper already. I've actually had a notebook and a Post-it pad with me almost constantly in the last couple of weeks (one for outlining blog/article ideas and the other to remind myself of recipes I want to try, ingredients I want to research, etc), hahaha. My mind goes full-tilt pretty much ALL the time. :)

I hadn't even considered the drawbacks of trying to find the right keywords on a broad list of topics, though. I'm so glad you pointed that out.

I will start with narrow niches to avoid much competition. You talk about all your experience and blog about it without being overwhelm:) I hope this help...Nenita
