Below is a site I created in 2009 and built up. I owned it until 2021 approx. Then I thought I shut it down, but today I came across it and it is owned by someone else. How is
When I checked out the website itself i got a pop up on the screen saying the site is for sale and the content being shown is simply recovered using the way back machine.
That's interesting. There was no popup when I go, although I already made an educated guess it was restored using the way back machine.
Are you sure that's yours? Maybe a spelling mistake?
I checked via domain tools; I have no record of the domain in question.
However, it is not available for purchase.
Under articles, it does say articles by Jill.
Have you reached out to Sumit Bansal - who is the current owner?
No, I just discovered this today. When I shut the site down, I thought it would be deleted, not made available for sale without my knowledge.
Have you kept up with the register's yearly fees?
If the domain is not maintained, it will eventually expire and become available for purchase by anyone on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning it will no longer be yours.
It would not be yours if it weren't maintained.
Wow! I did not know there were annual fees after I shut it down. I thought it would be deleted. Crazy that someone else can buy or take ownership of my work without my knowledge.
You can contact the new owner and try getting them to see if they are willing to give you credit for your work or remove it from the site. Be polite and professional in your communication and explain your concerns.
If the new website owner is using your content without permission, you can issue a DMCA takedown notice to have the content removed. This legal process involves contacting the website owner's hosting provider or registrar and requesting that they remove the infringing content.
Suppose you have exhausted all other options and believe your intellectual property rights have been violated. In that case, you may seek legal advice from a lawyer specializing in intellectual property law.
Wow! I am shocked! I can't believe this can happen! I am sorry about such a painful discovery Jill! Hope you got this resolved. I felt that you were violated and your intellectual properties stolen from you.
I do hope you get this resolve.

How can a former site I developed/owned, and thought I shut down now be owned by someone else?

Hi Jill,
I believe I know exactly what happened in your case. It's a lengthy explanation, so made a post of it instead of replying directly here if you are interested.
My condolences you are going through this. I can imagine how sick this must be making you.
Regards,
Jason
Eric figured out what was going on, and it was partially my thoughts. My post can be found here. Welcome to the dark side of the web Someone else is the rightful owner of the domain, however that does not give tem the right to your intellectual property.
Based on a preliminary look, I'm guessing they are running the server the site is being hosted on. They do have contact information on the page you shared, and it matches with the data at ICANN. You can perhaps reach out to them and tell them to take down your property, although I suspect they are self hosting for less than ethical reasons.
Best of luck,
Jason
