Welcome back, son!
After high school graduation, my son decided to sign in to US army. I was scared and proud of him at the same time; many feelings came throught my heart and mind. I was asking him: why did you make this decision?. His answer was: I didn't decide yet what I want to do in my life.
After a year, he called me and told methat he was sent to Afghanistan for a whole year. It was another kick to my stomach!. I was : on the needles" for a year. But, I could't change anything...this was his decision and his mission to the Country.
After eight years of being moved from one station to another, from Afghanistan to States, and from Liberia to Germany, he finally back to US.
I found his post on social media a few days ago (I knew that he is coming back, but, I didn't expect he will write an article.)
His post:
Six years ago, I arrived to Germany as an active duty Sergeant, with three duffels, a rucksack, and a backpack to my name. Today, I leave as a reservist Staff Sergeant with a beautiful wife and daughter, the lights in my life, our dog Charlie, more luggage than I can count.
It's been a long, interesting jurney here in Europe. I've traveled to more countries I have thought I ever would. I learned how to snowboard in the Alps. I played hockey for an amateur German league. I learned how to be a husband and a father - and still keep learning!
I had a chance to show my wife and daughter where I was born, and where half of my daughter's roots come from. My grandma was able to hold her great- granddaughter in her hands.
Being stationed here has been a truly life-altering event. I never thought I would be here for so long, yet here I am, six years down the road, Sitting in the same PAX terminal as I arrived as a bright- eyed, bushy- tailed CID Agent.
Onward and upward to my family's next chapter in the Washington, DC.
I'm proud of my son: he found his place in the World, has a beautiful family. he did his mission to the Country and, finally, he back home. Welcome back, my son!

It is very moving and what happiness that your son returns safe and sound in your arms.
Blessed be your family!

Congratulations! This brought tears to my eyes. Thank him for his service, and oh thank God he is safe.
You have every right to be proud. I appreciate his great service. My grandson has done 4 tours of duty in Afghanistan and we have sweated out every one of them.
Grateful for his service. By the way, I did 6 years in the Air Force.

My son is JR ROTC, I hope he grows up as cool and quirky as you after his service. My brother did tours in Afghanistan and came back a different man. But it wasn't the good kinda different like I read here. Thank you for your service. One of my dear friends passed away last year, an Airforce Vietnam Veteran POW God rest his gentle soul.
He cheered me on to get my dad's gravestone/memory marker. the VA somehow forgot for 20 years. I don't know how it can take so long to recognize a guy who fought in WW2, Korea and 3 tours in Nam. Either way, when I hear stories like this it gives me great hope.
