I'm sure you've heard the news by now about Tik Tok and WeChat, and how it will affect U.S. customers.

This is a follow up to my past post on July 28, and the first new information we have seen on Tik Tok and WeChat since.

The tech sector of the US Stock Market took a hit today. The latter is due to the U.S. announcing that TikTok and WeChat will be banned from user downloads, starting Sunday due to national security concerns

What this all means is that updated versions of the apps cannot be downloaded in the U.S. beginning on Sunday. Users who have already downloaded the apps may be able to continue using the software.

"The only real change as of Sunday night will be [TikTok users] won't have access to improved apps, updated apps, upgraded apps or maintenance," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Friday morning on Fox Business.

Tik Tok has already been banned in India.

Those who have a current Tik Tok account in the U.S. won't be affected until a new updated version becomes available, then (unless something else changes) any new versions of Tik Tok will not be able to be downloaded.

Beginning Sunday however, there will be restrictions targeting WeChat that will be even more severe.

It will be illegal to host or transfer internet traffic associated with WeChat. Unless something changes, the same will hold true for TikTok in the U.S. starting as of Nov. 12

Cheers,

Kaju

So here we are 2 years after this post and hearing the same kink of possibilities. Do you think there is any greater chance now than 2 years ago of this happening? They keep saying that they believe China is using the app to grab our data and personal info. Can't all of the social media pretty much grab all of that info too.

I want to try Tik Tok as a way to get more organic leads to my website and social media pages.

Are you still using it?

Things are heating up Kaju, moving forward the internet is going to become more and more politized. Just a personal opinion.

Always it is the users that bare the brunt of any posturing.

Hopefully, the internet remains a politically free environment.

Unfortunately it is always ideology first and people second, which is not a sustainable recipe for humankind.

Alex

No doubt Alex. Don't believe that this is all because of national security concern with China. We have a presidential election coming up in the U.S. in less than 7 weeks.

Our President wants to flex his muscles over the Tik Tok issue, while simultaneously trying to hasten the Tik Tok deal with Oracle.
All before the election.

Politics are already involved and Social Media along with Google are the biggest culprits, IMO, Alex! we are just along for the ride!

Good to know Kaju! I haven't used either of these apps yet as I have enough things to keep me busy lately, lol.

If I was using them however, I'd think about whether or not it would be more of a security risk to do so if they're no longer being updated. Plus, as it sounds like these will be illegal to host or transfer internet traffic on these in the months ahead, I'd be looking for a different software or app to use now.

Thanks for the update!
Best wishes :) ~Sherry

I used Tik Tok once, and even if its not completely banned in the U.S., if it will be illegal to host or transfer internet traffic on these in the months ahead, for sure I won't be using it.

Nice to see you and
Wishing you all the Best, Sherry!

Kaju

It doesn't concern me as I have never used it and to be honest don't think I would have.

But you have to laugh. In the interest of National Security when people can still use the app if they have it installed.

Just keep using it and don't allow updates.

Just more control.

All this tit for tat with China!

Mick

It's unbelievable, and I believe it's also a play to get the Tik Tok deal made with Oracle.

Very interesting and ties in with the new YouTube Shorts being trialled in India. After this, I bet the US will be next :-)

Great to know!

Thanks for the link Chrystopher. I will not be surprised:)
