My success so far :)
My reason for joining WA may have been different from the reason of most others. I already have a business that I just started up. What I did that was a HUGE mistake was paying YP to run ads for me. This so far has proved to be a huge waste of money for me.
WHY?
I paid YP an undisclosed relatively large sum of money for 1 reason alone. I wanted my add to appear on the first page of YP. I figured with all the monthly searches that YP gets, that this would help to drive me some business. So far, this has not been the case. I have received maybe one phone call from that ad.
In my mind when I made this decision, I looked at myself as an individual doing a search for a service. I usually, A.) google keywords that will bring up local results, or B.) go to yellowpages to search businesses. Going to YP is always my second choice, however. I did this because I wanted exposure.
What I wish I had know is how easy it is to learn SEO here at WA prior to making an advertisement purchase with YP. I do not have a 1st page rank yet, but I am very close and will probably see that success very shortly, BUT, I know that if I keep going that I will have the 1st page rank that I seek and the local business exposure that I need to keep money coming in.
Content really is the key. In this process I think I basically erased my whole site 3 times to change things, format it more user friendly, play with SEO etc. It has taken a while, but in the last week alone I have went from not being indexed at all to being indexed on page 2 in yahoo and bing and on page 6 in google. This is from revising my content and writing articles at streetarticles.com. The articles I wrote there and the links to my site really did help with rank, so there is no BS there when others tell you to do this.
I know if I keep adding content, making wise choices and keep my site about the visitor (even though this particular site is not monetized and never will be) my rank will improve and so will phone call about the services I offer here in my hometown.

Bricks and mortar businesses tend to be easier to rank for through Google places pages as opposed to relying on SEO alone.
