Hello WA Family,

How to sell products on WordPress is our topic of the day, I hope you are learning some new things from reading my posts. I do enjoy writing these for you, and I want you to know I appreciate all of your support.

My Step-by-Step Guide

What to Sell

Consider Your Niche

  • What are you passionate about?
  • What knowledge or skills do you possess?
  • Selling products you're genuinely interested in translates into better product descriptions, marketing, and customer service.
  • Is there a demand for products related to your interests?
  • Use online tools like Google Trends or social media listening to identify trending products and customer needs.
  • See who your competitors are and what they're selling.
  • Look for gaps in the market where you can offer unique products or a better customer experience.

By considering your niche and the questions above, you can get started narrowing down what products to sell on WordPress.

Product Consideration

Your Niche

  • The products you promote should be relevant to the topics you cover on your website and the interests of your target audience. This builds trust and establishes you as a credible source.
  • Consider promoting products that complement each other.
  • For example, if your niche is fitness, you could promote protein powder alongside workout apparel.

Take your time researching what potential customers shop for in your niche will help you narrow down your choices.

Product Quality and Reputation

  • Before promoting anything, thoroughly research the product's quality, features, and customer reviews. You don't want to endorse something that has negative feedback or doesn't deliver on its promises.
  • Partnering with established and well-regarded brands increases trust and conversion rates.

Any product that I would not purchase myself, I never promote to my potential customers.

Affiliate Program

  • Different affiliate programs offer varying commission rates (a percentage of the sale you earn for promoting the product). Choose programs with competitive commissions that incentivize promotion.
  • The cookie duration determines how long a sale is attributed to your affiliate link after a user clicks on it. Longer cookie durations are generally more favorable.
  • Look for affiliate programs that provide promotional resources such as banners, product descriptions, and marketing materials to make your job easier.

Just because a product is inexpensive does not mean that you will experience more sales, when you give people what they really want and need they will pay the price.

Conversion Possibilities

  • See if the product has a good track record of converting clicks into sales. Look for programs that offer conversion data or reviews from other affiliates.
  • The product's target audience should align with your own. Consider demographics and interests to ensure a good fit.

If you need feedback, why not ask your WA members what they think about a specific product?

Additional Considerations

  • It's easier to promote products you're genuinely interested in. Your passion will translate into more engaging content and recommendations.
  • While some competition is healthy, avoid promoting products in oversaturated niches where it's difficult to stand out.
  • Familiarize yourself with any legal disclosures required by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) when promoting affiliate products.

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose high-quality, relevant affiliate products that resonate with your audience and have a strong chance of converting into sales and commissions for you.

Identify Trends

  • Certain products are more in demand during specific seasons. Consider offering seasonal items alongside your core products.
  • Stay updated on popular culture and identify rising trends. You can source or create products that cater to these trends.

Even though trends can result in sales, you will need to be constantly researching to keep up what is trending.

Solving Problems

  • What problems do your target customers face?
  • Can your products provide solutions and improve their lives?
  • What makes your products stand out from competitors?
  • Highlight the unique benefits your products offer to attract customers.

You will find it is much easier to sell products that your customers are searching for, so focus on what problems people are searching for is your key to selling without pushing products they don't need or want.

Helpful Tips

  • Don't overwhelm yourself with a vast product range initially.
  • Test the waters with a curated selection and expand as you gain experience.
  • Pay attention to customer feedback and adapt your product offerings based on their needs and preferences.
  • For new or unique products, consider pre-order options to gauge customer interest and secure initial sales.

By following these strategies and conducting thorough research, you can choose products that have a strong chance of success in your WordPress store. Remember, stay adaptable, keep learning about your target market, and be willing to refine your product selection as your business evolves.

Design Your Store

  • WordPress themes control the look and feel of your website.
  • There are many free and paid themes available, some specifically designed for e-commerce.
  • Consider themes that are mobile-friendly and easy to navigate for customers.

I prefer community themes for online stores such as Buddy X, I have found that they can handle an online store extremely well.

WooCommerce

  • WooCommerce is a free plugin that transforms your WordPress site into a fully functional online store. It's widely used and offers a vast array of features for managing products, payments, and shipping.

With WooCommerce Setting up an affiliate store is a piece of cake, I published a post on how to do this in the past if you need any step-by-step tutorial.

Add your products

  • Add detailed descriptions, high-quality images, and clear pricing for each product. Highlight features and benefits to entice customers.
  • Categorize and tag your products effectively. This helps customers find what they're looking for and browse related items.

Research your products effectively to provide your potential customers with the best descriptions possible, I also recommend including reviews from real customers.

Launch and Promote

  • Before going live, thoroughly test all functionalities like product adding, checkout process, and payment gateways. Ensure a seamless experience for your customers.
  • Spread the word! Utilize social media marketing, email marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO) strategies to drive traffic to your online store.

There are many helpful resources available online to guide you through the process in more detail. Search for tutorials on WooCommerce or WordPress e-commerce setup for a more in-depth walkthrough.

Final Thoughts

An affiliate store is easy to set up, you will also be able to include your products in your content without using affiliate links. This is the strategy that I have used with good results, so when you are ready start selling products on WordPress.

I hope you found this helpful,

Jeff

Hey Jeff,

Thank you so much for this incredibly helpful step-by-step guide on how to sell products on WordPress! As someone who has been interested in starting my own online store, this overview has provided me with all of the key information I need to get started.
I really appreciate you explaining the different eCommerce plugins available and recommending WooCommerce as a great flexible option for both physical and digital products. Knowing I can use WooCommerce for any type of product is very useful. The detailed walkthrough of actually setting up the store by getting hosting and installing WordPress, choosing a theme, configuring payments etc. makes the whole process feel very manageable.
The tips you included on marketing strategies like blogging, building an email list and using social media will be invaluable in actually attracting customers to my new online store. I also hadn't considered using WooCommerce extensions so thanks for mentioning how those can add extra functionality.
It's very helpful to know what payment and subscription options are available, and that WordPress can support one-time and recurring payments. Great suggestion on exploring SEO, analytics and marketing automation plugins too!
Thanks as well for providing cost considerations. Knowing there are free software options but I should budget for hosting and any premium add-ons gives me a good idea of what to expect expense-wise.

Thank you!

Hello DRRIC

I am happy that you have gotten so much from this post. I know that I knew very little when I started and want to help other members experience success quicker than I did

Jeff

Good post Jeff. WooCommerce is very flexible and you can mix and match affiliate products with physical ones you ship yourself.

Affiliate products have a particular product type which bypasses the normal order/delivery system.

I have a couple of websites running WooCommerce stores. It is easy to set up and has decent back office records you'll need for your returns.

Dave

Thank you for sharing, Dave

It is good to hear you are happy with WooCommerce. I have been using it myself with no problems as well.

Good point we can promote physical products and affiliate products on one website.

Jeff

I'm working on some code at the moment that will send an admin email when anyone clicks the Buy button for affiliate products in WooCommerce.

The WooCommerce standard emails only work for conventional products that pass through the order process. I want to know how many click and buy/don't buy.

It will need a bit of Javascript code writing. I haven't got my laptop with me atm, so I might delay this a bit.

Dave

Sounds well worth your time, Dave

Keep us updated on how this works out for you

Jeff

Wow, I didn’t think that was possible. So, we can open our own online store on our domain? And there are no legal objections to that?

Hello Morena

No problem opening up an online store using WooCommerce plugin, I am happy that I was able to teach you something new

Jeff

I have a Woocommerce site but it has been dormant for a while! Good info, Jeff
