Why I Stepped Away from TikTok and X (And What Affiliate Marketers Are Doing Instead)
Hey folks,
Just wanted to share a bit of chatter that’s been sitting with me for a while—and I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing...
I used to post regularly on TikTok, and I dabbled on X (formerly Twitter) too. But recently, I’ve seen a serious uptick in explicit, borderline pornographic content showing up in my feeds—unsolicited, random posts that have nothing to do with my interests or the accounts I follow. At first, I thought maybe I’d clicked on something by accident, but nope—turns out it’s becoming a more common issue.
I don’t know if it’s bots, weak moderation, or something else entirely, but either way, it killed my motivation to use those platforms. If I’m building a brand that’s based on trust, integrity, and the RV/off-grid lifestyle... I can’t afford to have my audience stumble onto garbage like that while engaging with my content.
So, what are affiliate marketers doing now when it comes to short-form content?
Turns out, many are still on TikTok—but they’re playing it smart:
- Dialing into ultra-specific niches to train the algorithm.
- Using content buckets with consistent themes to keep their audience clean and engaged.
- And a lot of folks (myself included) are pivoting toward YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, or even good old-fashioned blogging and email marketing. Platforms where you have a bit more control over the viewer experience.
It’s kind of funny—this all reminds me that not every shiny new tool is worth our time. Sometimes, stepping away lets us re-focus on platforms that actually respect the effort we put into our work.
So, I’m curious—have any of you run into the same thing on TikTok or X? Are you still using them? And if not, where are you posting instead?
Let’s chat. I think this is one of those conversations we need to have more often in affiliate marketing circles—because where we show up matters just as much as what we say.

I never used TikTok but had the now X when it was still Twitter which I feel was better then than now as X, however never had issues with such images on X that you are seening.
But I have seen many on Instagram (which belongs to FB) so not happy with Instagram with the way that is heading.
I even got a text message sent via messenger someone saying Hi Dad this is my new phone number which obviously is a scam of some sorts, had it blocked then weeks later got the same message with a different phone number.
Instagram is getting worse since FB took over and FB Messenger is allowing too many fake messages to go through.
Not to mention all the fake FB accounts posing as a friend you already have there. I have seen many of my friends have their accounts hacked, that is why I don't friend anyone now due to this, so many fakers out there.
Thank you for thoughtful thinking and actions about TikTok and Twitter and other short forms. I have some uneasiness on reporting of Meta underfunding Insta, after their purchase of it some years ago, resulting in lax moderation there, too. I like your nod to old emails and blogs and writing. Thanks.
I've been using X since before the change from Twitter. Have around 9000 followers there and not seen any "sensitive" content. Not used Tik Tok.
I have twice recieved unsolicited adult material via Facebook; a long time ago.

I know lots has changed on Facebook. There were many uncontrolled groups I had been apart of that every second post you’d see material like that.
I cannot speak for TikTok but for X you can adjust your setting to defeat that crap under privacy and safety. Adjust the content you see, to be specific, uncheck the "Display media that may contain sensitive content" Box
You can also mute keywords that lead to posts like that (Onlyfans, nude, nsfw, naked, sex, etc.) under Mute and Block.

Very Good Post!! I personally have had several times when on Facebook had post that said "I love the post and would like more information. I tried to friend you but could not please friend me so I can talk to you." Turned out to be scams! Happened on Instagram also.
