A Dog's World

As I sit here tonight, trying to make sense out of the events that transpired here today, I can't help but revel in the simplicity of a dog's world. We as humans really have a lot to learn from our furry friends/family!

Today, my two babies had a misunderstanding. Now, it wasn't thinking someone else's bone belonged to them... I could have only wished it was that easy! It was instead Toby feeling that Bandit had trapped him. He could not get free, and couldn't understand why his brother would do this to him! So he lashed out...On the other hand, Bandit couldn't understand why Toby all of a sudden attacked him!

Now, these aren't small dogs. No, no they are 100 lb Siberian Husky/Malamute/Bull Mastif cross. Only one year old babies, that I had the pleasure of bringing into this world. Their mom was found on the highway in -40 C weather, skin and bones, with tapeworms, and pregnant. We nursed her back to health, and one week before her spay appointment, she delivered 10 babies! Now, at the time, we had a female and the 2 of them did not get along, period! So we rehomed her after the babies were weaned, and found loving homes for the rest of the pups. But these two, just stole our hearts! We had to bottle feed all of them along with mom's milk, but she wasn't interested in anything to do with motherhood. So, we cleaned them, encouraged potty time, and became the mom to these pups.

So today, imagine our surprise when my son comes flying out of his bedroom saying, "Mom, I think the dogs are fighting". I ran outside to find the two of them (BEST Buddies) in a full-out brawl! Without thinking, I was down the stairs, trying to separate them, slippers in the snow, and leash in hand preparing for the worst. Blood was everywhere...

I managed to unclick the collar from Bandit's neck, then my hand got an incredible shot of electricity through it. I had been bit. I'll worry about it later! I reached in again, and got the collar off him, as my husband grabbed Toby. Upon checking them out, it was minor wounds, except for the 2 teeth that are now missing from Toby's mouth...

The cause of this horrible turn of events? While playing, Toby grabbed Bandit's collar. Bandit turned, which trapped Toby's bottom jaw in the collar. Toby thought Bandit trapped him, while Bandit thought Toby was a lunatic! After cleaning them both up, and giving them about an hour of down time, we hesitantly re-introduced them. Prepared for anything. It was as if nothing happened! Toby smelled and cleaned his brother's wounds, and Bandit did the same.

Imagine if us humans could take a half hour to calm down, and forget what literally JUST happened, to go back to being BEST Buddies again? To move past the misunderstandings, and just love each other?

So, as I sit here in front of the fireplace, with all 3 dogs at my feet. I am in awe at how quickly they move on. All is forgiven. And yet, we are the "Evolved Species".

Give your furry friends a hug tonight, and take the time to learn what they have to teach.

this is just Wow :)
the pure world of dogs

Thank you!!!!

Great read! I have to ask though...where do you live? It's not too often I hear other people before us here in Toronto, Canada says they got snow before us unless you're up in the mountains.

I chose a niche around dogs as I was unable to find enough areas to monetize with what I specialize in and am passionate about. Since breaking my back a second time I have started working with aggressive cases with bully breeds such as Rotti's, Sheppard and my favorites the "pitbull class" as there is no breed called a "pit bull", very few people actually know this...anyways, off topic now lol.

If I have a case where 2 dogs are involved or even a dog aggressive dog has a slip, all I have to do is simply get the dogs mind to change focus off the initial aggression and I can get them back together, sometimes after a bloody brawl that I could not get right away or the whole ordeal took a lot longer to defuse than anticipated, but in the end requiring a trip to the vets to seek medical attention but, I can have these dogs back together within minutes. Of course some dogs, not breeds, DOGS need more time than others but all you need is to change the intent. Whether it's submission, a few work cues, quick exercise routine or even affection, it really depends on the particular dog but unfortunately, humans just don't work as efficiently as dogs do. That being said, I would never recommend anyone trying to handle a situation like this without professional help. Obviously, when they are your own dogs you have no choice and you do know your own dogs better than anyone.
By the sounds of your story, you have hit the nail on the head exactly and knew how to handle the situation. Unfortunately, bites do happen and you accepted it like a champ and hold no remorse or grudge against the biter which shows, you did not learn the lesson the dogs showed because you acted just like the moral of the whole story so there was nothing to learn from you but for your readers, I truly hope they can all take a little time, a few deep breaths and move forward just like Toby and Bandit did in this quick and short-lived, heated situation. Great work with the dogs and great work with this post!

Wow, thank you so much for your comment! I live close to Winnipeg, Canada, and yep, there's about 8" of snow that's here to stay. It's been here for approx 2 weeks. (-20 with the windchill yesterday morning, BRRRR! ⛄ )
Thankfully, I am one of the few that have researched and learned proper separation tactics prior to having a brawl to breakup! However, the collar wrapped around Toby's bottom jaw prevented that... hence the bite (it's pretty swollen today, but thankfully it was a snap, not a rip! So no wounds, just sore)
I'll admit I was surprised to see such a thoughtful comment to my first blog, again, thank you so much! You made my day!!

As long as you promise to keep that nasty weather I will make as many nice comments as you like!

No way!! As much as I love the comments, but you can HAVE the snow!! ❄ ⛄ ❄

If ever there were a dislike button, I would be pushing twice!!

Hahaha!!! Blizzard in Southern Manitoba today,(-10 with blowing snow advisory). Are you SURE you don't want it?????

Toronto - started last night with a blizzard leaving roughly 6 inches on the ground. Today no snow, -16C with windchill -24C. 30lm winds gusting to 45km made fast work of the snow with only traces left on the grass but still instant booger freezing once you step outside. You and that Winnipeg whiteout hair jinx'd my nice weather and all my pretty colored leaves gone in one day. I hate youi miss voodoo Janice frost, I hope your flannel PJ's freeze to the bedframe lol I don't really hate you....as long as you take that hex off me....

Hahaha!! If you're REALLY REALLY nice... then maybe! ;P

Depends on what your definition of REALLY REALLY NICE is...?

Comments, feedback, you know... nice!
