In 3 days we reach the middle of October, and that means we're half way through with the October Challenge: Boosting Social Media Traffic. Click here if you want to see the announcement post here on WA where I explained the motivation behind it, and its rules.

At first, I was a bit ashamed to post these results today... But it made me realize something very important (read until the end).

Anyways, here are the results so far:

  • Twitter Followers: From 226 to 248
  • Instagram Followers: From 53 to 60
  • Met several successful bloggers who have responded to me (very grateful for these connections, I'm learning so much from them).

That means, on Twitter I'm averaging almost 2 new followers per day, and 0.5 new followers per day on Instagram. Considering the followers count, Twitter has been going much better for me, around 4x better.

If you'd like to see my daily posts and how I go about completing this challenge, here are my accounts:

    Is This Too Slow??

Let's be honest here: I can imagine that looking at the above numbers you're quite disappointed (just as I was)...

We always say: Slow and steady wins the game.

But what we're seeing right here, isn't THIS exactly slow and steady? Then why the disappointment...?

Let's look at what REALLY happened here...

    • 1 new post per day, and 3 comments per day, is a very short time investment on my part. I could realistically spend more time on it.
    • I'm splitting up my efforts on two platforms, which is a big mistake. If I'd focus all my efforts on one platform, I could double the number of posts and comments with the same time investment.
    • Most importantly: Both accounts are GROWING.

This leads me to the conclusion of today's update...

    We Don't Notice Daily Growth

This is really mind-boggling to me: When something grows slowly, you hardly notice it on a daily basis - not even on a weekly basis.

It feels like it's standing still, when in reality it's actually growing.

Even with all the evidence right here on this page, I can't help but feel underwhelmed. Shouldn't there be more ACTION happening?

    WRONG!

Here's a better way to look at it:

    • It works! It's GROWING: slow and steady.
    • In business, what do we do when something works? We do MORE of it!

The social media challenge is a success because it works. Even though I'm putting in a minimal time investment, I'm STILL getting results.

This brings me back to blogging...

We write and write and write... And it feels like we're not getting anywhere with all the effort we've put in.

The need for instant gratification, instant results, is so immense that we can trick ourselves into thinking a success is a failure.

I hope today's article helps you gain a new perspective on your own progress...

Have you also been disappointed lately, when in reality you're growing slow and steady?

James you are doing more than ok, I love reading your posts. You will one day find you are flying 👍
I have read from the “income school” guys, that it is a ghost town for 10 months and then the trajectory takes off...
    🤞

Cordelia, thank you for your kind comment, I really appreciate it. I also watch the YT videos of the "Income School" guys. I like that they are still actively building new sites where they follow their own guides. I hope your site will soon reach the 10 months mark, I'm excited to see your success! Best, James

    Ahh James thank you 🤗

    😄

Growing followers does take time and effort James.
I try to do Twitter twice a day to attempt to keep up. Its important to return retweets
but it moves so fast you can miss people.
As you RT on their timeline, those who have done the same for you, its easy to retweet others you don't know. Don't just stick to those who do the same as you, variety is a requirement to find new customers. Authors, journalists, crafters, those on there for fun, everyone is a potential follower.
Plus there are many who will RT for you because you use their hashtag. Make a list and use them regularly.
The more followers you have the quicker you gain more.

Hi Linda, thank you for your advice. There are still many things I can improve upon. I will be sure to implement this in the second half of #SocialOctober! Best, James

Hi James. In my opinion great content that is written with passion and engages the audience will always take time to write. More often then not, slow and steady will definitely win the race. Jim

Hi Jim, well said! Thanks for your comment and sharing your advice. Best, James
