Duplicate Content Curse

It seems that 'Duplicate Content' is something really awful, verging on the ultimate taboo, and you will be shot at dawn for even breathing about it, let alone practice such a vile act.

During my research to try and eliminate a problem of duplicate content on my site, I came across this extremely interesting video, with two participants from the 'Almighty Google' giving their views on this delicate subject.

I'm more than certain that for those who worry about having duplicate content, this video will surely help put some minds at rest.

It's pretty long, but it's also pretty interesting, so it's worth watching it..

Thanks James, very interesting!

I think it will help to put some minds at rest, Nick...

Yes, but it is kind of worrisome, this duplicate content thing. I know my content is original, but somebody else may steal it and post it as theirs.

I'm afraid that can be easily done, Nick. I'm not sure how to go about such a situation...but I can see it happening in the future. I know that whoever had posted the content first, through the date and time stamp, should be regarded as the one with the original content, but I have no idea of the mechanics behind this.

I suppose we just have to hope for the best and that nobody steals our content.

Well, that is one way of dealing with it. Another way might be getting a response from members here who know more about this than we do...

Yes that's a good idea...

Thank you James! You have a way with words! ;-)

I will watch this tomorrow for sure!

Hehe...thanks. You're too kind there, Cin :)

You know me better than that James! ;-)

I like what I know, Cin, and I think you're great :)

Right back at ya my great friend!

OK....so here were are. The best thing to do is to realise that there is no penality so to speak for duplicate content. It is the "QUALITY" that makes the point.

This was stated by the very first person from the very beginning of the dialogue..

We need to be as helpful and uniquely informative with our content as we possibly can. Google will figure out the rest. Keep in mind that what you are selling should pertain to your niche as a benefit to your followers...

Thanks for bringing up this point for all of us....

Yes, it seems like there is no penalty in itself for having duplicate content on your site. Indeed, Google stresses to have as much quality and unique content as you possibly can in an effort to rank better.

I have to say that I feel much better after watching this video...and I had to share it :)

Thanks for sharing James. My internet connection is too temperamental at the moment, but I've saved the link to hopefully watch it later!
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

You're more than welcome, Sharlee. I hope things get better soon.

James

Very interesting indeed

Cheers, Mike...

hurting your website rank is the last thing you want when building a business.

I can't agree with you more...

Thank you James, this is something I worry about too, especially when I put in a review page for an affiliate company that has given me very little information to write about. Many times I am forced to borrow from their about us page, but I put it in quotation marks and tell my readers that these are their words. I don't want to make up too much content and mislead my readers. It seems Google 'understands' this and will not send their guards dogs after me :)

I think your worry is a worry most bloggers tend to dwell about, especially where reviews are concerned.

I don't think the guard dogs will have you for breakfast, don't worry, but Google also stresses that if you can make your content as unique as you possible can, it will also help you, as a blogger, to outrank other bloggers writing about the same thing.

James

Interesting... I will look at it
This one is shorter;)

I found it to be very enlightening, Loes..

Thanks for your link, Loes...I'll have a look :)

I like your writing style, James. You had me chuckling.......I'll watch the video later. I marked your post.
Grant

Cheers, Grant!

I must admit that I also chuckle away when I write something, but in secret :)

I was once told that if I don't enjoy reading my own writing, then how am I expected to get others to enjoy reading what I write?

It made a great deal of sense that...

Thanks for sharing the video. I'll have to check it out.

No problem, Sondra...I'm sure you'll find it quite interesting.
