I’m starting a new project – Learn how to build a website yourself in WordPress in 2017 – And this is Day 1.
I’m taking my inspiration from Jay here at WA with his 4 part video series with step by step, over the shoulder, live case study on building a niche site in 2017.

I’m going to be following through with Jays training, doing the tasks and posting daily on how I’m progressing. My posts will create a basic outline on learning how to build a website in WordPress

Seeing how long it takes me to make my first affiliate commission – the bit I’m most interested in – AND… I’m sure a lot of you out there are too!
I thought of doing this as a case study on my own website but decided it would be great to post my progress here daily instead.
I realize that in taking on this project that this is a mid to long term strategy. I will be building out my brand new website concentrating only on organic traffic, so it’s about getting traffic directly from Googles search engines.
I’m so excited to get this ball rolling… Woohoo!
So… Day 1
Step 1. Researching a Niche & Keywords
I already had a physical product niche in mind but wanted to check that it was viable enough to build my website around that niche. I went to Amazon to find how many products there were available to promote and see what sort of prices they sold for.
Presto, the prices are anywhere from $34.99 to $1790.00, wow that’s a huge scope in prices and the niche has about a hundred products that I could promote. So as far as the niche goes I’m pretty happy with the number and price of the products.

On looking at keywords I used the Keyword Tool here at Wealthy Affiliate and the results for my main keyword looks pretty promising with Searches of 3227, Competition of 178 and Article Power of 8.5.
One of the products that I would be promoting has Searches of 590, Competition of 109 and Article Power of 8.6, so that's looking good as well.
I went through my short list of product keywords and found that most of them had similar searches, under 300 competition and article power of 8 and over – so I’m going ahead with this niche – Woohoo!
Because I know at this point that the product list I have so far is within the WA Keyword Tool parameters I will do some more research later to increase the number of keywords to write posts about.

Step 2. Finding an Affiliate Program
Having finished my research on my niche and keywords, I decided to stay with the Amazon affiliate program, especially since finding out that Amazon changed its fee structure in March 2017.
With the new structure I’ll be receiving 8% instead of a start of 4% for my category which is Pet Products.

In order to find affiliate programs to promote, put into Google search bar – your keyword followed by the words, affiliate program, it’s just a matter of sifting through which ones you’re happy with, depending on how much they pay, when they pay and how they pay.
