Do Plants get Cancer?
We have all heard about animal tumors, the ones that effect animal cells. For decades, science has been trying to understand the concept and the mechanism of cancer. There is one common understanding states, that animal tumors are often a result of bad mutation, the tumor develops and grows when the fundamental building block (Cell) looses its control or its organized programing code. Many factors can cause cancer; radiation, nicotine, chemicals, …… etc. However, ‘’Apart from infectious diseases, most illnesses (including cancer) are multifactorial. This means that there are many factors involved. In other words, there is no single cause for any one type of cancer”[1].
With that being said, does cancer happen also to plants? Let’s just say too bad for animal cells because “plants don’t get cancer like animals do,” said Susan K. Pell, director of science at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden,“ and the tumors they do get do not metastasize because plant cells don’t move around.” Rather, they are held in place by cell walls. So plants can experience the same phenomenon animal cells do , “as in animals, the mechanisms that restrict the proliferation of somatic cells in plants can fail, leading to tumors“ [2] just slightly different.
Plants do not smoke and can develop cancer! …. Ok then what causes plant tumors?
Plant tumors — aggregates of cells that have multiplied excessively — are usually caused by a bacterium, virus or fungus, or may develop as a result of structural damage, Dr. Pell said.
“The bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens is one of the most common culprits in plant tumors and is the cause of crown gall,” she said. The resulting growths are visible on trees in Brooklyn and elsewhere.
Plants are much luckier on the subject of cancer because they’re less vulnerable to its effects. The matrix of rigid cell walls holds the cells in one place. Don’t worry they have got it covered!!

Thank you for your comments . About your question : It means that plants also get cancer like animals do , the only difference is that plants cancer can not spread, which means a lot less dangerous . And it does not spread because plant cells do not move around ..... What does that tell us ? Let's look for a way to immobilize the animal cell cancer so it stays in one region , then we can get rid of it. Did we get there yet ? Not yet .... IZI
Salaam Alaikum Izi,
Nigella sativa also called black cumin, black seed.
I have been looking into that for a while. The best source of information I have found with a lot of scientific research is the GreenMedInfo. If you are not familiar with that site, you are in for a treat! They have an article - Black Seed " The remedy for everything but death", and an extensive bio-medical literature on the subject.
Also, you will find a huge library of articles and researches on turmeric, one of the most healing spice on earth. One of my favorites!
Happy to be on the same page with you, seems that we have a lot in common.
Looking forward to exchange more with you.
Marie
How interesting Izi! I agree that most illnesses are multifactorial. Cancer for example can be the result of a combination of environmental toxins, a poor diet, negative emotional thinking.... Identify the causes, go at the source, act upon them and let the transformation begin. The truth is that one thing lead to another. Being aware is a vital step. Utimately all living things with their inner intelligence want to get better and preserve the integrity of cells.
How can we help?
Marie
