Why Choosing a Niche Begins With You!

For some reason, beginning internet marketers make this the most difficult aspect of their business.I’ve personally known people who have spent WEEKS wracking their brains trying to come up with the perfect niche. They fill their head with so much stress and worry, thinking that their particular niche is oversaturated, or that there is too much competition.

This shouldn’t be the case. The beauty of internet marketing is that it should be fun! Few people actually get paid to discuss something they love. However, you have the opportunity to build a successful business doing just that, so the first thing you need to do is look in a mirror and see who you are as a person.

Below are a list of tips that can help you quickly and decisively choose the perfect niche for you:

1. Decide what are you passionate about – Your readers are not dumb. You may come out the gate swinging, but if you are writing about something you don’t feel, if you aren’t passionate about your niche, then it will show in your writing and the inconsistency and infrequency of your posts. You will eventually fall by the wayside like so many others before you.If you are strictly in this for the money, then stick with your day job.It is only through persistent and consistent writing that you will build a following and you will never accomplish that just by picking a “money making” niche that you have no interest in.

2. Realize you are in this for the long haul – This goes hand in hand with your passion. When you attempt to pick a niche that you have no interest in or are passionate about, then it becomes work. When it becomes work, you expect to get paid. Thus the frustration begins because you will find yourself putting in hours and hours of work and never getting paid.Make a checklist and ask yourself the following to help determine what’s right for you:

·What topics am I interested in?

·What topics am I knowledgeable about?

·What topics do other people come to me for advice about?

·What topics do I love talking about?

·What topics would I write about for free?

Only after you come up with a list based on this criteria, should you explore its profitability.

3. Research the profit making potential in your niche – There are a variety of tools that can help you determine if there is a market for your niche.Google Trends can help you determine if your keywords are growing or shrinking in popularity and whether there are related trends to yours.Google’s Keyword tool can help you determine how many global monthly searches there are for your chosen keywords or niche topics.Research is important because while you may be interested and passionate about ballet slippers for elephants, no one else may be.

4. Size up your competition – You should always check the size of your competition. Not to discourage you, but to search for a unique angle that they are not covering. This can help to set you apart from them. They may be talking about the best ways to care for your poodle, so you can take that a step further and talk about the best ways for working couples to train poodles.

Keep in mind that you might need to go through this process with a number of topics before you find one that fits for you. You’re unlikely to find a topic that fits all of the above criteria perfectly – but hopefully something will stand out to you a little to help you choose a niche that’s perfect for you.

Hi lthamar! Thanks for sharing your article to everyone!Wish you all the best on your projects!

Hi Ithamar, thanks for the article. Just like you mentioned, I can't find a niche that match all the criteria. I am interested in a couple of topics, but I'm not an expert in those areas. In fact, I'm in the midst of learning or developing my knowledge and skills in the related topics. Still haven't made up my mind on the niche of my first website...

Hi Soo,

The secret to this business is to take action, so the important thing here is to pick one. The beauty of picking a niche is that you don't have to be an expert at this time. Surely there is a subject you love and are passionate about! Let's say you are passionate about animal rights. This is a niche that has a huge following and not only can you write all day about it, but you also don't mind researching and learning more about it on the go.

That's they key - remember no one knows you're not an "expert" but you. As affiliate marketers, we learn on the fly because not only do we start with what we already know, but we don't mind spending a couple of hours a day learning more. That's why we stress picking something you are passionate about, because we are going to spend the rest of our lives being committed to learning as much as we can on that niche.

It can be anything - fly fishing, model airplanes, fashion, whatever. Just pick one and go from there. Remember, no experience is necessary :)

Thanks Ithamar, for the encouraging reply. Will pick one topic and see how it goes from here. Who knows, may be I will become the expert one day! ;)

Well said, Ithamar. ~ Jude

Thank you Jude!

Your article is very informative and will give me a lot to think about when it comes to deciding what niche I want. The only part that is going to be hard for me is writing about what Im passionate about I don't like writing

That may be true right now, but it is a skill that can be developed. There isn't a wrong way to write. Just make up your mind to keep doing it and I promise you that you will get better.

Great article and timely when you consider the fact that I am currently re-thinking my niche. This really isn't about creating more work, but being invigorated about a subject. Thanks for the reminder.

You're welcome. If you stress out over working from home, you're doing it wrong...lol!

You are so right, writing about something you enjoy or are knowledgeable about is so much easier than having to research out every response or comment on your site. If you are passionate about the niche you will most likely know the answer already and just have to type it out. Saves loads of time and stress.

Exactly my friend!
