No Brain No Gain:Seeking a Personal Mentor
Have you ever felt like no matter what you do or how hard you try you just can't keep your mind
on the game or stay focused, as if your brain is just some where else??
Well this is what I'm going through right now with my studies @ WAU.I 'm trying so hard to learn and retain the information and training but my learning capabilities are falling short to the task due to severe dyslexia and learning difficulties.I'm finding my self watching the video lessons several times because my mind unintentionally wonders and ''skips'' much of the information and the reading portion is even more of a maze.
I know this isn't because I find the lessons boring,on the contrary I know they are brilliant.I'm just starting to really doubt if I have what it takes to soak it all in on my own.I often feel embarrassed lately because I often forget the same thing over and over again and have to be retaught sometimes 3 or 4 times before I finally 'get it'.For this reason I stopped using live chat lately because I feel I'm getting a reputation for not paying attention.
I guess I am just wondering if there are any very patient, experienced WA members that would be willing to show me the ropes of online marketing on a very basic level.I honestly have no clue as to what I am doing and would really love to find a personal mentor that could teach me with more of a one on one Technic. It seems to be the only way I can really learn something new.Once I learn something and understand it I have a very driven work ethic, just getting to that point is quit a mountain to climb.
I really want to succeed here at WAU..I think I might just need someone to believe in me and teach me in the way my brain processes information.
Thank you so much for taking time out of you day to read my blog.Have a great winter!

Hi,
I don't have sever dyslexia but I do have three young kids (one that is literally sitting on my lap or beside me everyday, all day, so I've my fair share of distractions) so I think I can relate to how you're feeling.
I'm sure if you ask anyone here, they can tell you that I've struggled tremendously with grasping the information and how to apply it and it's taken me over a year (granted I had a 5 month break) but I'm finally starting to grasp it.
Trying to absorb all the stuff here at WA is overwhelming to a lot of people because it's a foreign concept. Trying to learn it all has been nothing short of trying to learn another language, form another planet, but I'm getting better and better everyday. Why? Because I refuse to give up and if it took me 4, 5 10, 20 times to watch or read something or ask the same questions over and over well, that's what I did.
No one here cares how long it takes you to complete the tasks, you're not graded on your accomplishments or how fast you're reaching your goals. Or how many times you're asking a question.
Perhaps you're trying to rush, maybe you need to slow down and give yourself the room you need to really try? I'd say you're very first step should be switching your inner voice from "I just can't do this without a mentor" to "I know I can do this, I just need to focus a little better or I need to slow down a bit".
I know this sounds archaic but perhaps you could keep a pad of paper and pen with you when you're listening to a video or reading a lesson and take notes. When you ask a question in chat, write it down with the answer you receive and keep it organized so you can refer back to it when you need to. That's what I have to do. I've a notepad and on the top of each page it says "posts" or "Keywords" or "menus" or "images" because I need to be able to find this stuff as I approach each task.
I'm a bookmarking fool and my bookmark menu would rival the Vatican when it comes to everything I've saved and archived.
Try to limit your accomplishments or lessons to small, easy to digest pieces. For instance, try to just work on one post, or maybe you need to break it down and just find images for a post one day, then the next day research one "thing" in regards to said post, then the next day work on writing one paragraph, then the next day write another paragraph. Baby steps until you get into the hang of it...I bet you get better the more you do it, I know I did.
When I started writing my posts, it could take me 1-3 days to write one post....between my four year old needing this or that, the housework, my older kids, volunteering at school, helping with homework, cooking every meal, my mommy duties, and sharing one computer with 4 other people....it was painful and I thought perhaps this was just not a good time to be trying to do this. Maybe I should wait until all the kids are in school full time. But, I quickly talked myself out of it, I've come to far to quit now.
Now, I can write a post in one to two hours, still with all the distractions because I have a method. I do all my research first and then I sit down to write and unless the house is falling down around me, I don't leave my computer until it's done. I focus and concentrate on one thing at a time.
BIS is an excellent resource if you look at her trainings (her blogs are fab too), she has tons of ways to help you focus and improve your writing:
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/5-easy-article-writing-templates
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/generating-ideas-for-articles-and-blogs-using-mindmapping
She has far too many blogs for me to put them all here but if you go to her profile you can see a complete listing there.
I'm sorry this was so wordy but I know what you're going through and I know how frustrating and defeating it can be.....hopefully you found some advice you can take away and implement it into your learning process.
Good Luck on your journey and please don't give up on yourself or the possibility of following your dream of having your own business.
I believe in you and I believe you want to succeed and if you slow down and give yourself some space and understanding, I've all the confidence in the world that you will get there....
Patty :)
Suggestion for you.
First just watch the video. If the video is about doing something to your website, the second time you view the video have your website up and work on it while the video is running. You can pause the video at anytime and do the task performed.
If the video involves Google or another type of service, set up the account before watching the video a second time unless it explains how to set up the account.
Watching the video training in small segments may help you. If you can only watch two minutes of a video, just go that far and go back a little later to view another two minutes. There is no race here to see how fast you can complete any tasks.
Hope this is helpful

Hi Amy,
Sometimes I get so overwhelmed with all the information that I take a step back. I take a break. When I go back, I read through the training a few times, slowly, and watch the video over and over again.
I play and pause, make notes, do it again, until it starts sinking in. Sometimes it takes me a week to complete one lesson.
