What's the Hurry?

Everyone deals with different levels and different types of stress. For me, one of the most stressful things is the way that everyone rushes around trying to do things as if there won't be any time left tomorrow. While this could be true, most of these absurd time constraints are self-imposed. It is important to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks in a reasonable amount of time; however, it's not really very productive to rush through something just to say that you've completed it.

With my job in the past, I was constantly rushed. For the past 10+ years, day in and day out, it was a constant source of stress. It doesn't help that someone keeps asking me if I'm ready if I'm not, and it won't get me ready any faster. I can't really be of much help if my mind is still on something else as I try to force myself to concentrate on a new task when I'm not finished with the old one.

One of the reasons I enjoy working on my website is that it allows me to do things mostly at my own pace. I try to set time limits, etc., but I also have other work to do, and I know that it has to get done by a certain time or I won't be able to devote any time to writing or researching topics on my site. Whether it's eating, driving, or working, I can't stand being rushed. It can take a usually enjoyable experience and turn it into something miserable.

So, if you're anything like me, it's OK not to have 50 things done every day. While I have to keep my procrastination in check because I'm a perfectionist, I realize that nothing that I do is going to be perfect (like this current post), no matter how much time I spend writing or editing it. Sometimes, it's best to go with the first thing that comes to mind, although spending a little time to edit it once usually doesn't hurt.

Rushing through things, in my opinion, takes a lot of the fun out of an experience. A lot of the fun is along the way, and you miss it by going absurdly quickly. The final destination is not always the best part of the trip; how you get there matters a lot, too. I try not to take too many things for granted because I don't know how long that they will last. Sometimes, things are over before you know it, so it helps to try to make them last.

I recall hearing the phrase, "A stitch in time saves nine", and was asked what I thought it meant at least once when I was in elementary school. To me, it means that you'll actually save time by doing it correctly the first time rather than having to go back and do it again and again the wrong way. Take the time to do it right the first time so that you're happy with the result.

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Your points are well taken. Members who learn well and apply their skills effectively can have better results than those who rush through the training and make mistakes.

Funny enough in this business it pays to be a perfectionist. To a point as you cannot stand still. As nothing will happen then.

I wish you the very best.

It's more of an application to life; I worked so much that I didn't have time to enjoy life. I think that the old saying, "...everything in moderation, and nothing in excess..." is applicable. Though being a perfectionist seemingly has advantages on the surface, it's really a setup for failure because "perfect" is a goal that no person can achieve, and it will drive you insane trying to do it. I think that it's good to check over things a few times, don't get me wrong, but one has to use his/her judgement and move along sometimes.

Great post, Ian. We live in a “rushing” world. Everyone is rushing somewhere but what are these people rushing for? Is that the objective or the goal? I agree that we set our pace and produce the work that is sustainable over the longer term to achieve our goals. Most people cramped too much in a short time and fail to achieve those goals, saying it is a failure and give up. The issue was simply, many thing need time to work out. It did not fail but we fail to give it enough time to be successful.

I know. I used to be one of those people. I made a lot of money, but I was miserable. Just goes to show you that money is not necessarily equivalent to happiness, although it's necessary to have some of it to live.

We need to work at e everything at our own pace

I think so; I think that everything tends to fall into place the less we try to control it.

Good post, we need to find the balance that best suits us.
Comparing ourselves to others can make things very difficult.
Thanks for sharing and have a great week.

Yes, I agree. There is a lot of comparison, and what works for you may not work for someone else, and vice versa. That's why variety is such a good thing; it keeps things interesting.

Fantastic post, Ian. Working at your own pace is my own mantra and I like the fact that there is no time limit to what we can accomplish here in WA--no pressure! Slow and easy wins the race! Thanks for the well written post!

Jeff

Thanks,

Sometimes, I think that I say it best when I don't fool around editing it much. Exactly--you can't win the race if you drop out.
