How to get unstuck-you need a catalyst
A catalyst brings change. If we keep doing what we are doing while we are stuck, we will only remain stuck, or dig in even deeper.
That agent for change, the spark, or the 'push' is a catalyst. What we need is something new, anything, even something very small can make the difference.
When you get stuck in the snow, what do you do? I always look for a tree branch to stick under the wheels; something for the tires to grab onto.
That is how we get unstuck, we need something to grab onto.
First of all, lets explore possible causes of that “stuck” feeling: the things we do or the thoughts we think, that lead us to the deep snow.
When we feel like we are going nowhere, there must be some behavior that has driven us into that place. These behaviors or patterns in our lives are like tiny misguided vehicles that have driven us down the path to where we are now. Our wheels are just spinning and the engine keeps revving, but we are going nowhere.
Here are some of those pitfalls:
- Deceit (self-deceit)
- Doubt
- Despair
- Denial
- Doing (too much
- Determination (believe it or not!)
Deceit refers to the self-deception that springs from our own insecurities. We believe the lies that our own self-doubts are telling us. We need to learn to recognize those lies.
Doubt is being uncertain, maybe fearful of making a new decision. Doubt is very close kin to deceit. When you doubt, you are lying to yourself about your own abilities.
Despair is believing your situation is bigger than your ability to overcome it. Despair follows behind doubt very closely. The only solution to despair, is a ray of hope.
Denial is the opposite of hope. It is remaining oblivious to a problem by denying there is a problem. When you acknowledge that you are stuck, you will stop spinning your wheels, get out, and look for a tree branch. You have to recognize that you are stuck, before you can get yourself unstuck.
Doing too much – Poor priorities – can leave you stuck in one place. And exhausted, too. Exhaustion is a main contributor to getting stuck. Slow down, stop spinning and prioritize your tasks. First thing is first...look for a branch.
Determination is normally good when meant as perseverance. But when someone is “overdetermined,” they are prone to blockage. That over determination can lead to being stuck and a need for breakthrough.
So, about that tree branch...
It is simple, really. Something as small as encouragement will give your spinning wheels something to latch on to. Also, just being aware of your problem, looking at the symptoms and facing the reality of your situation (stop lying to yourself) can drive you to new action.
Even a very tiny new action will lead to a reaction. It only takes a very little traction to get that tire unstuck.
So, take heart. Take stock. And then take action. Getting unstuck has to start by slowing down and thinking your situation through.
I say all of this to provide just a "little" bit of encouragement.
I hope that this blog can be your branch.
