Personal insults on comments - really?

While this is a rant, it is also a mark of respect. Why? Read on ..

I was putting a comment on a site page that was reviewing an obviously questionable online offer. Read: Pyramid scheme.

We all know how this goes, pray on the desperate and naive, get em in take their money and run for the hills. SSDN (Same shit different name)

While this is bad enough, for it to be packaged as 'a do nothing and get paid' type of deal, just to pull in more 'get rich quick' types, just sums up how brazen it has become.

Now I get that this will appeal to some, some who don't know any better and some that DO and are quite happy to exploit others. (I won't comment on the latter it wouldn't be pretty.

This is happening all the time so I know I should expect it and rise above etc. And I usually do, I am a VERY tolerant person, sometimes too tolerant for my own good.

However when I was reading the comments section of this post with and one comment from one of the 'pro' scheme brigade was verbally abusing the author and added insults directed at the persons family!! I saw red..

I thought 'Are you serious?' could you show your true colours anymore? I really didn't know how the author would reply. Me - wouldn't have been a polite response, not at first anyway. It did prompt me to write this however, after a few edits!

I have to take my hat off to the author who handled the comment with absolute professionalism and tact. A lesson for me to take on board as it would have been extremely difficult not to get defensive on that comment.

The interesting thing was that after the authors response the reply back from this (misunderstood) individual, while still pro the scheme, seemed less bathed in personal attack and more inclined to defend in normal language.

So kudos to that author (member) for that reply and allowing the comment to be viewed.

While I was tempted to put a reply on the page to this person I knew that the author did the best job of deflecting and coming across as way more level headed.

This is a testament to the personal quality of this author and in keeping things professional.

So lesson for me - step back, breath and protect your image, keep things professional. Let them hang themselves. It will be hard but man that author nailed it.

Thanks team

Wade

I learned a lesson from a friend here in WA. There was a less than kind comment made to a blog and the it was handled taught me a lot.

Lately, I've been noticing really rude comments on blogs and have seen how well they have been handled. I think the way we respond to such comments gives us an opportunity to take the high road and this impresses other readers. Thanks for bringing this up!

Good information, I agree with the author and always believe in taking the high road whenever possible, thanks for sharing!

Yes definitely helps hold that professional image

I truly believe it is about manners, respect, how you wish to be treated so that is how you should treat others.

Yes you are right, I think respecting all comments is the write way to go and deflecting the ridiculous .

Personal attacks only show one's ignorance.
Kudos to the author.

It certainly did in this case. I just couldn't believe it we written like that.

Well done to the author of the post and well done to you for appreciating his/her response and sharing with us.

Thanks Marion, the author did a surpurb job on this.

That's a great way of looking at it it Wade. I know I've been guilty in the past of speaking without putting brain in gear so it really does make sense to take a step back before you comment :)

Thanks Jude. I think it becomes even more important with written comments as meanings can so easily misinterpreted. However there was no such problem understanding that comment to the author.

Thanks Wade and probably a lesson for most of us! I find it hard to step back at times, but know sometimes that is the best way to go!
Appreciated the Blog. Regards, Lisa

I am the same. I would have jumped straight in with a reply which would have been too defensive if I had not seen this handled so well

Kudos to the author indeed, snd great lesson not only for you but for others ad well..Thank you for sharing!

You're welcome, had to get it off my chest as it just was bugging me. And writing this blog helped me refocus on the positive takeaway.

I am very happy to hear! You got something positive from a negative situation !

Thanks Wade Great insight.
