2020 Goals- Am I Doing What I Need To Be Doing?

I was listening to a podcast the other day, and the person speaking said something that I found very profound. It seemed to be what I needed to hear in that moment to bring some perspective to some of my frustrations.

The person said that so often we have plans and goals for ourselves, and we may even sit and think about some steps to take to get there. That's all fine and dandy. But she recommended thinking about these goals a different way.

Picture these goals achieved. Think about what that looks like. If we are talking about that online business, what is that? A certain amount of traffic with a goal amount of revenue coming in? A completed e-book or online course? A thriving Youtube channel?

Okay, now that you have that picture and vision in your head, think about the person behind those achievements. What do you think they have to do on a daily basis to make this happen?

Are you doing those things?

How can we achieve the goals we have to be successful when we aren't doing the things that successful people do? I think so many people (myself included--I fell into this trap this year) subconsciously think that these are things we will start doing ONCE we are seeing results.

Nope! To achieve the things you want to achieve in the future, you need to start doing what it takes today. You want a thriving Youtube channel? Making a video once a month probably isn't going to do it. What does a person who has a thriving Youtube channel at the end of 2020 do today, January 5th? Probably posts a video! Probably markets the video! Etc.

I had a goal in 2019 of creating an e-book. I did not achieve that goal.

As I think about 2020, I need to take a lot of things into consideration-- my family life (having a baby this summer, plus have 2 kids already), my time, energy, priorities...

I realized I can't make a goal of writing an e-book this year. I think about the person I will be at the end of 2020... I don't think I will have the time with a young baby and other life adjustments. I don't think I will suddenly be making 50k a year at the end of 2020. The things one needs to do to make that happen...I don't see myself being able to maintain that the second half of the year.

So now is the time to think about what it IS I will be able to do. What do I see a mom of 3 young kids being able to accomplish this year?

  • Writing 1 - 2 quality articles per week
  • Sharing articles on social media regularly
  • Working to improve old articles and optimize SEO where needed
  • Aiming to create a Youtube video for at least 1/3 of my posts.

Right now, I admit I'm not utilizing Youtube as I should. I realize many will think a goal of making videos for only 1/3 of my posts is low.

But I decided I need to make goals that I believe the person I will be at the end of 2020 will be able to manage.

I could be right or wrong about what kind of person I will be. But all I can do is make my best guess and get to work!

Hay Holly,
My wife would say "Go Girl", you will be in the top 200 this year i
predict. I wish you and your family a very happy New Year.

Great points Holly. I like it, simple and to the point. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed year ahead.

I think you have the right idea. Just keep it up.

Have you looked into Sqribble for creating ebooks? You might check it out. I got it, though still haven't used it. However, I will!

Thanks-- I'll look into Sqribble. I've heard of it, but not explored it too much. For the most part, though, my reasons for not creating an e-book weren't because of not having the means... it was more complicated and I had a really hard time figuring out what would be pertinent in my niche that isn't already free (on my site or others). Then once I got an idea and started the research and planning, I struggled with a lot of self-doubt. In 2020, I'm thinking more that I may not have the time. If I can get it completed before July, that would be great, but after July I don't want to make any big goals because keeping a newborn alive is a big goal in and of itself! :)

A new baby! Great! Ah, but you can be thinking of ideas for posts while you feed the baby, or do some research while Baby sleeps. There is always a solution. You just have to figure out what works for you.

Yep! Certainly can and will. :) but I do want to give myself permission to enjoy my new baby without feeling guilty because I set goals that maybe weren’t realistic for that time in life. It’s a short period of time. Babies don’t keep!

Great post. All the best on your 2020 Journey at WA.Have a wonderful day. Fitzgerald

You bet, Holly! This is not a sprint, but a marathon! Baby steps each day for the long haul!

Jeff
