I came across this on a site while investigating commission rates on newegg.com -

So I wrote into Amazon and asked about this and they replied that their affiliate program is now available in all 50 states. So there's that. I suppose this would be sort of an ever-evolving issue. And that's just Amazon, I imagine there are others where it's still an issue.

@MineThatBird thank you for the detailed response, I really appreciate it.

Hello! While this is an annoying and frustrating issue, don't let it psyche you out and don't let it shut down your work.

There are MANY other affiliate options -- including many even better (and more potentially lucrative) affiliate options than the ones that are potentially being shut down by states like these.

Just when I was getting started with affiliate marketing several years ago, and had just started earning sizable affiliate income, the state where I am living shut down all Amazon affiliates (it's not my home state - so this made me dislike this state even more . . .) .

The states who are doing this don't seem to care AT ALL that in some cases they are taking away families' entire income, in one fell swoop, by shutting down Amazon affiliate income.

But I take it affiliate marketers earning big bucks aren't a large enough group to have any kind of sway or power in numbers as a countervailing force against arbitrary (greedy?) money grabs by states like these. Those state law makers are seriously harming their constituents by taking away their option to be an Amazon associate (especially affiliate marketers who had invested a great deal of time and effort in developing a solid income online).

But those same states also are then losing out on all of the income tax these professional affiliate marketers were earning and paying taxes on to those states. Many affiliate marketers earning big money (as Amazon associates) then had to make a decision to move to a different state, and pay THAT state income taxes on big bucks.

But leaving aside my own personal annoyance at having been shut down like that (by a state where I don't want to live for many reasons - mostly because I love my home state, where my family an friends all still live and I want to get back there - also my home state did NOT shut down affiliates) --

The MAIN POINT I want to make is that there are MANY other (and potentially much more lucrative) affiliate programs that you will be able to benefit from even if you live in a [short-sighted/money-grabbing state that gladly puts its own citizens at a serious disadvantage for earning online compared with people in the rest of the entire world -- it's just SO wrong. I can't help it, the annoyed rant keeps sneaking in - this state really did cause me financial harm, personally - so ... it's hard not to take it personally. It's truly unbelievably unfair -- should be considered to be a violation of interstate commerce and so much else.]

I WISH I had known about Wealthy Affiliate several years ago when my own affiliate income was "shut down" by this state -- willy nilly -- just as I was really starting to see the earning power of what I had built with so many hours and weeks and months (years) of hard work.

If I had known about Wealthy Affiliate back then I would have quickly seen that there are so many ways and so many different affiliate programs (including Clickbank and many others) that I could have EASILY focused my work on.

But I didn't know about Wealthy Affiliate back then and I didn't know I had any options. I thought all affiliate income was being shut down by this state -- not just Amazon associates and other similar large retail affiliate programs.

Another important point to consider: remember that Amazon several years ago (fairly drastically) reduced commissions for many categories. Amazon also took away added commissions that were based on volume. Amazon has a very short cookie duration.

There are many reasons why we should all work to diversify our online income and the types of affiliate programs we promote.

So if anyone is living in a state that shuts down Amazon associate income for their constituents, take heart, and realize that this can be a blessing in disguise in that it can help you focus your efforts on far more lucrative kinds of affiliate programs that are NOT caught up in those states' greedy sales tax grabs.

If only I had known about Wealthy Affiliate back then -- but I do now -- so I am so excited (for all of us here at WA) to be building NEW foundations in the right ways, with the right kinds of affiliate programs (including focusing on much more lucrative kinds of affiliate programs).

Sorry for the continued ...rant... woven throughout ... it affected me by shutting down my online income for several years, until now.

So in a nutshell, does that mean that residents of California can't be Amazon affiliates? That never occurred to me previously.

I'm eyeing Target as affiliate now then. They even have books, including "The Easy Way To Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr (which I plan to promote on my upcoming website). Never would have thought so until I researched it, however.

Yes. Nexus law affiliate states are preventing certain affiliate programs. I have been denied by a few for that reason. Google Nexus affiliate and you can read up on it.

You can have as many affiliates as you want. I don't have links to multiple affiliates in one post usually but I suppose you could. You can certainly have different affiliate links in different posts on your site.

They are supposed to accept you regardless. However I do know that Amazon prefer you just to work for them. J
