What should I do with WordPress User Registrations?

I really enjoy good news - who doesn't? That's one of the reasons I don't watch the commercial news on television - it's negative and benefits no-one! So the other day I received my first WordPress registered user and then shortly thereafter, another one! Whoohoo!! But what should I do with WordPress User Registrations?

As far as I can gather, these users register on my website in order to comment on blog posts. Is this correct? So do I send them a 'Welcome' email or do I check for any sinister motivates, or what?

I enjoy good news but I'd really like to make it even better by leveraging the registrations in some way, if that is even possible.

What I also don't understand is that if people register, why haven't they posted any comments? As far as I can determine, they can only register by filling in the 'Leave a Comment' form at the bottom of blog posts, which also includes a 'Comment' field.

It just seems a bit strange and unknown to me so any feedback will be highly appreciated! I need to understand how this works and what I can possibly do with the registrations. Surely this needs to be good news, but how can I make it great news?

Agree with Rich, don't allow people to register. There is no benefit to allowing this.

Thanks, same thing happened to me today. I might be worth putting in the training videos if it isn't already.

I'd recommend going into Settings > General and unticking the Membership box that says "Anyone can register". Then in Settings > Discussion you'll need to make sure in the Other Comment Settings section to untick the box that says "Users must be registered and logged in to comment". Rich.

Thanks @RICH! So what you mean is that this way, you limit the people who can register and also not restrict who can comment. So essentially anyone can comment but not everyone can register? Do you think that these registrations may be malicious or have ulterior motives?

You're actually allowing anyone to register as a User on your site. Not recommended! Rich.

Settings changed - I have Unticked 'Anyone can Register' but found that 'Users must be registered and logged in' was already unticked... I'll be watching this closely now :P

I'd also go into Users in the menu and delete anyone who has signed up as one. Rich.
