SiteComments - this is how it's done!

Do you know how many times I have had to disapprove a SiteComment comment, and respond with the following? A LOT

"This is SiteComments and not SiteFeedback.

Your comment should be one that is specific to the Post Topic, and is engaging and thoughtful. You want to make a comment as if you landed on the page "naturally", read the page, then was compelled to comment."

Here is an example of a Great Comment, and what we should all strive for.

The following are NOT "up to par".

I get a lot of SiteFeedback instead of SiteComments - frustrating!

I hope this will help & teach others in giving proper comments.

I'm guilty of that. My very first comment was actually supposed to be feedback. I didn't understand the difference between until I got the rejection.

I understand your frustration but please also understand that the comment/feedback system is new for many people. At least they're taking the time to try and use it. Even if I got "feedback" through the comment system, I would still take the feedback to heart and see if it's worth making any changes.

Hi Darrel!

Of course! - we all start somewhere, and Lord knows I've made my share of mistakes. I always give the reason (as quoted above) why I had to disapprove - and I hate to disapprove folks comments. It does not make me feel good!
Maybe Kyle should put very CLEAR instructions on that page to alert the newcomers.

Jeff certainly leaves some awesome insightful comments. :) I think the 2nd comment isn't too bad but the 3rd definitely needs a little more depth.

Neil

Hey Neil!

Agreed!
Hahaha - you should see some of the others I've received in the past though - I just couldn't stop shaking my head in disbelief.

I think it was last week it took several days to get one single comment that wasn't feedback, never mind a proper comment.

You're using the system a lot - what's your experience?

Joanne

I know exactly where you're coming from, Joanne. lol

Yesterday, I received a 10 word sentence comment from one of the WA threads. It provided zero value, so I trashed it and the member didn't receive one back. I know it's harsh but we are all in the same boat and should be equally making the efforts.

I've just trashed another from the threads because it was clear the member hadn't read the review properly and said "Thanks for sharing" twice in that same comment, lol.

A week's quite a long time to wait haha!

I actually do get some great comments most of the time from SiteComments. (Not to rub things in or anything) :P

I'm posting 10 comments per day on SC, and I'd say at least 3 or 4 comments received are worth replying to.

I'm also testing out the WA threads as you know, and receiving mostly great ones too.

The trick is to tell members what you want from them. I say something like....

"Please post at least a 50 word great quality comment on the topic of my blog post "xyz"."

This appears to be working well :)

I think no matter whether you use SC or the threads, you're always gonna get a few poor quality comments.

Neil

I hadn't thought about the difference between site comments and site feedback. I have been giving feedback on sites not comments. Thanks for the post.

Two different things altogether.
If you click on the light blue SiteRubix tab to the left, you will see them both, and within the system as well.

Not to worry - we're all learning.
I do know that after a number of "disapproved" comments, you will not be able to use it for a while (not sure of the number though).

yes a learning curve.. I am also guilty.. hopefully I have realised the error of my ways..
sorry to anyone that I messed up on..

Hi Shelley!
... please, not to worry. Every single one of us makes mistakes - myself included.
I'm hoping this will help people out so the system works for us all the way it was designed.

I don't think they necessarily need to be quite as long as that (let's not forget, a lot of genuine comments are not particularly long), but they definitely need to look genuine and be on topic. Feedback is definitely wrong. I always disapprove the feedback comments.

Hey Marcus!

Maybe; ... but boy, when I get a comment like that I'm "in heaven"!

It's obvious that my article was read, the comment was on topic, and what he said was definitely engaging. It was an exquisite example of thoughtful commenting that is taught here at WA.

A proper SiteComment comment!

Definitely. Perhaps I need to put more time into my comments :-)

Just read and commented on your latest post - I just love it when that happens!
"There's gold in them there nuggets"!

Which post? I don't see the comment

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant you posted a comment on my site.

By the way, the 424-word comment was not through SiteComments, just to be clear.

Love it even more then!
I hope people take note - comments are great content !

I gave up from comments for some time now. You reminded me to start again. This first example is indeed great to see.

Thanks Jovo!
... and Jeff does a fabulous job - a perfect example for this post.
BTW - you do too!

Seriously though, I didn't include all the "wrong" commenting that's come my way thru SiteComments - some of them are incredible.

Understood Glen, thank you.

I now feel very self conscious commenting here. This is a helpful distinction between the two. I had a comment rejected once and a good explanation provided for the rejection, ie it was site feedback and not a comment on the post. I have since been more observant and careful. When I feel I cannot adequately comment I skip and go to the next.

That's perfect! ... that's what you should do.
If you feel it's an area you can't leave a proper comment on, go to the next one - that's exactly how to do it!

And thank you for commenting here! - never be afraid to comment if you have something to say and it is relevant.

I probably skip 10 for each one I write!

Wow Amber, you may be having more trouble than me!

I agree, the comment should be relevant to the post and I get a lot of comments that just tell me how great my site is, rather than commenting on the topic of the post. I like that at least you can write why you disapprove a comment and the person who wrote the comment can read that reason. This can help them become a better at leaving comments.

Agreed! - it has been stated very clearly the difference between the two, and how to leave a proper comment as well.

None of this should be happening if folks paid attention.

When I first joined WA, I had a couple of comments disapproved because they were feedback and not comments. But I learned. I have reviewed a bunch of sites, but have not been compelled to leave a comment. I just move on to the next one. Sometimes, I find it frustrating to see a page that just is not ready for review.

Morning Glen!
... yes, you would be amazed at some of the comments I have been getting - would be much better though, if at least folks knew the difference between SiteComments and Site Feedback - but the quality of the comment IS important too.

ps - you leave GREAT comments Glen!
