Wet Winter – Happy Birds

As I look at my soggy yard I wonder what could I possibly add to Weekend Gardener Online. But as I sit in my warm cozy home and look out the window.

The Privet hedge that was full of green leaves is now a hedge of brown sticks.

But those sticks are full of Hummingbirds until the Blue Jays arrive and they all fly away. The little birds return, swinging on the tiny thin branches and nibbling on the berries.

Cyprus with the smooth cylinder columns has been ruffled by the winds. And rain and a playground for the Blue Jays and Crows.

They stand on the branches pulling them out more than the rain. The small birds pause on the tips barely moving the branch.

The sky maybe grey but with a pause in the rain. The backyard that I only observe from inside is a wonderful playground for the birds.

To my surprise, they love the plastic bluebird feeder I received last Spring from my neighborhood store.

When it was offered free with a purchase of the birdseed I normally buy. I hesitated because it looked so cheap and I assumed it would crack with the heat. And does not make it through the summer.

I was wrong. I birds love it!! This winter they are eating through the entire feeder every 2 weeks. The feeder and hedge add to the worms and insects escaping the soggy soil.

Only to be scooped up by the birds.

An organic yard may be a little more work, pulling weeds instead of spraying them. But knowing the wildlife is healthy, not nibbling on nature that has been poisoned.

This is worth every ache and pain at the end of a weekend of gardening.

Very nice, Garry! Thanks for sharing!

Jeff

I agree. We have 4 nesting pairs of doves each year. I think its because of the shelter have built for their nests, but also because of the organic nature of the way we garden.

That's a completely different world to here. Amazing

I'm sure it's very pretty and quite relaxing. Thanks for sharing.
