WA Advent Calender 2025 - Sunday 14th December
Happy Day 14, everyone!
Today, our Advent calendar has bought us something both practical and symbolic - a candle.
There’s something timeless about the soft flame of a candle at Christmas. Long before fairy lights, LEDs and fibre-optic reindeer took over our living rooms, candles were the way to bring light into the winter darkness. In fact, early Christmas trees were decorated with real candles balanced on little metal clips… a beautiful idea in theory, a serious fire hazard in practice!
Candles have been part of midwinter celebrations for centuries. In Christian traditions, they symbolise hope and light returning to the world. In older pagan customs, they honoured the sun during the darkest days of the year. However you look at it, a candle is a tiny reminder that warmth and brightness can grow even when everything around feels quiet and cold.
Nowadays, candles are everywhere at Christmas – scented ones, advent candles, giant pillar candles, and the ones you light because you want the house to smell like cinnamon, even if you haven’t baked anything. Many families still use an Advent candle, burning it a little each day until Christmas Eve, while others love the cosy glow that transforms a winter evening into something peaceful and magical.
There’s also something beautifully grounding about stopping for a moment to light a candle. It slows you down. It creates focus. It adds a bit of calm to a season that can easily become frantic. And nothing says “festive ambience” like discovering yet another candle your neighbour has bought because they were absolutely sure they didn’t already have one in that scent.
Whether you light candles for faith, tradition, memory, or simply to make the room feel like a warm hug… their glow reminds us that Christmas is, at heart, about hope, comfort, and connection.
Wishing you a cosy, candlelit moment of peace today

I love your '... early Christmas trees were decorated with real candles balanced on little metal clips… ' They were indeed - and dinosaur me grew up with them in Austria. 😊😀🎄

When I read this about candles, I burst into laughter. My wife has candles burning every day. Some have a nice smell and some I have to climb out the back window, jump over the neighbours fence and come through the front door just to avoid smelling it.
Bur the reason I laughed is because nearly every time someone mentions candle I think of the Two Ronnies 4 candles sketch. I don't know how many times I have watched it but it creases me up every time.
So if you have never seen this sketch here is a link.

Blessings to you Gail.
I grew up with The Two Ronnies and this sketch is an absolute classic. Love it! Thanks for the reminder - always makes me smile. It should be put on the TV just after the news to let people know that the world is not all doom and gloom.
Totally agree. We need cheering up after news.
Have a great evening
You too.
