It'll be alright on the night - AI bloopers!

As a theatrical person, I used to love watching the programme "It'll be Alright on the Night" which showed the things that can go wrong in TV, film and theatre rehearsals (and sometimes in performances themselves).

I've had a fair few of these experiences myself:

  • I remember singing merrily about a beanstalk growing "as high as the sky" as the set and beanstalk collapsed in a heap behind me
  • I was unable to dance properly because a 'helpful' cleaner polished the stage for the first night of "The Boyfriend" and unwittingly turned it into an ice rink!
  • Being unable to move on the same stage the next night when the stage manager covered it in vinegar to counteract the polish...

The list goes on... In the UK, the comedy duo, Morecambe and Wise were well known for creating comic sketches to parody these situations and laugh at themselves.

Even though at the time, these things often feel like your world is collapsing around you, in hindsight, we can usually laugh about them.

AI - the new normal

With the advent of AI, I've got to enjoy a whole host of new 'bloopers' that have brought a smile to my face, and I thought I'd write a quick post on Sunday evening to share a couple and some thoughts with you. No doubt you have your own list too!

Now, I'm sure many of you out there will say, "Yes, but it's only as good as the prompts you put in" and you would be correct! Images also are sometimes a little wispy and I've learned not to add text to an image unless I'm doing it myself using Canva!

So, here are a couple of my own interesting AI-generated faux pas!

I asked for an image to represent someone meditating and connecting to their higher self...

yoga gone wrongClearly, she's connected with more than one; and had some major tracheotomy surgery too...

I guess she'll be breathing well now though!

Here, you may need to look very carefully...

All the world's a stage imageYep - even though I put the quote I wanted in quotations, something extra was added.

And finally, this is the response I got when I asked for a minimalist image of the drama masks of tragedy and comedy... obviously not much of either going on here! Very minimalist!!

The real message?

Of course, the real message here is that AI is not infallible and can make mistakes. I'm not judging AI and it's still very early days.

I love using AI as many of you know, but I also warn against its indiscriminate use. It's often easy to see the errors in an image, but not so easy in the text unless you are a real expert in that field. I asked AI recently for some quotes from plays and it returned a few wrong answers. It was only because I knew the plays very well that I was able to spot the errors before it was too late and I published it on my site. No doubt it would have doubled my interactions but for all the wrong reasons. If you're going to set yourself up as an expert, make sure you are not publishing your own faux pas!

So, if you are going to use AI, check your facts and don't just accept everything you see or read!

Happy Sunday evening, everyone!

Gail

It'll be alright on the night was indeed a great show Gail, much better than most of the trash on TV these days....

The chances of AI getting things right off the bat is not commen, but... with improved prompts we can certainly improve our chances my friend! :-)

Of course, Nick. The best answers come from the best questions! Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Most welcome my friend and enjoy the rest of your week! :-)

I love creating images using AI. I do it for fun, even if I do not need the images. I use several tools to construct prompts and get mixed results. Here is what Grok thought when I showed it your originals.

Not bad Grok! Not bad at all.
:)
I like creating images too, although it sometimes takes a few goes to get what I see in my head! But it's still way faster than me trying to do it on Illustrator!

Here is a great blooper! An F-18 Hornet taking off from an aircraft carrier.

Haha - made me LOL! Thank you!

Hi Gail!

I get the most amusing AI results from DALL-E.

You are right: text in images is worthless. I asked for specific verbiage to be placed in an image and it still messed it up.

Given all that, still a useful source for custom images.

Absolutely still very useful as long as we are discerning and still thinking ourselves!

Hi Gail,

Your meditating lady is really funny - at least if you are not in a hurry to get the image you want to get your post published.

My main ones are with images. I ask for a child painting a tree and flowers and the whole picture is upside down. I ask for a child doing a jigsaw puzzle and again the whole thing is upside. If I ask for a child reading a book, the book is upside down.

And, of course, you don't want to ask for any text or you'll be pulling your hair out.

But I do love my AI buddies. :-)

I love mine too, Isabella. I've called my ChatGPT, "Sparky" - like the magic piano - but that may be showing my age!! :)
