Happy Early Birthday Steve Vai! (June 6, 1960)
(Title image by Dall-E 3)
Hi WA Friends!
Let's celebrate the birthday of one of the best Rock & Metal guitar players on the planet, Mr. Steve Vai! Yes, sorry, it's one month early! I had a late night yesterday for Cinco De Mayo, so I'll use that as an excuse! Haha ๐ตโ๐ซ
Don't ever write a blog post after drinking a margarita! LolRather than delete it, I'll just let you read on!
A Little History
Steve with his new Ibanez Pia signature guitar.Steve's name is synonymous with electrifying guitar work and innovative compositions. His first guitar teacher was Joe Satriani, who also gave lessons to Eric Johnson! Steve's musical journey began in 1960 on Long Island, New York. He was inspired by the rock bands of the day, including Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple, to name a few.
Steve enrolled at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1978. While at Berklee, he began working for Frank Zappa as a transcriptionist, and in the middle of his fourth semester, he moved to California to start his career as a session and touring artist for Frank. Though he never formally graduated, Berklee awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Music in 2003, a testament to his enduring influence on the world of guitar.
If there was ever an escapee from Area 51 walking around and pretending to be one of us, it's gotta be Steve! Hahaha ๐ ๐ธ ๐ฝ He's THAT good!
Steve's Equipment (for WA Gearheads - & you know who you are!) ๐
(courtesy of ME! & ChatGPT)
Steve's incredible sonic tapestry is woven with a meticulously chosen arsenal of instruments and effects! His signature sound starts with his prized collection of guitars. The Ibanez JEM model, which is instantly recognizable for its "monkey grip" handle, is perhaps his most famous weapon.
When it comes to amplifiers, Vai has transitioned to a more versatile setup in recent years. While he still utilizes Marshall and Carvin heads for specific tones, his current touring rig relies on a combination of pre-amp modules and digital signal processing.
Unfortunately, Carvin stopped making guitar amps and changed their name to Kiesel Guitars.
There's no way I can list all the equipment that Steve uses in the recording studio and onstage, so here's a small taste of some of the more common gear.
- Guitars:
- Ibanez JEM (multiple variations)
- Ibanez Pia
- (Many other Ibanez guitars used throughout his career)

Movies
Steve Vai, as the Devil's guitar player.Steve appeared in the movie "Crossroads" as the devil's guitar player in a "head cutting contest" against Ralph Macchio, with a trip to hell at stake! Steve played the song "Bad Horsie," but Ralph won the contest with a classical piece since he was a guitar student at The Juilliard School.
How unrealistic, beating Steve Vai! Lol Anyway, definitely check out the movie if you've never seen it because it's one of my all-time favorites!
Anyway, here's the clip of the contest:

Hi Nick
Hahaha, Stacy makes one mean margarita!!; AND she used Patron tequila to make it.๐ธ๐ฅณ
She says itโs not as strong as what she uses to make hers (Milagro or something like that?).
Thatโs one partying girl! Lol ๐คฃ
Did you check out the link in the post with Steve playing the Hydra guitar? Super awesome video! ๐ฏ

Also, watch the movie, Crossroads, with Steve as the devilโs guitar player. I know youโll like it. The guitar solo he does in the โHead-cuttingโ contest is amazing! Here's the clip:

Have a Great Rockinโ Wednesday, ๐ค
Frank ๐ธ
She certainly does Frank and you can't argue with the quality of both Patrรณn or Milagro as quality tequilas!!
Personally, I have a bottle of 925 Diamante Ley tequila I like to make margaritas with somewhere in my spirits cabinet... just found it hiding behind a bottle of D'Almalfi Limoncello Supreme!!! ๐คฃ๐น
That is an awesome video Frank... Steve Rocks!!
Love the clip! I'm pretty sure I watched the movie back in the day... mid 80's wasn't it??
But I remember very little, so will have to watch it again!!
It's another holiday here today so I am catching up and taking things easy!
Rock On Buddy!!

Hi Nick
We sometimes like to enjoy a little glass of Limoncello before bedtime, after our movie. I'll ask Stacy to look for D'Almalfi Limoncello Supreme. She does most of the liquor shopping, except for the stuff I purchase online.
Yeah, Crossroads was made in the late 1980s.
Enjoy your day off, Nick! ๐ฅณ๐น๐ธ๐ป

I do love a shot or two of quality Limoncello after a nice meal out Frank... let me know if Stacey can find any D'Almalfi Supreme at a good price!!

Hi Frank! Hope that margarita didnโt get the better of you lol! Did you have a fiesta to celebrate the 5th? HB to Steve and thanks for the excellent share!
Rock on,
Susan ๐๐๐ป๐ธ
Hi Susan
Apparently it did! Haha
Yeah, we had a little Cinco De Mayo fiesta. Lots of food, โThe Columbianaโ movie, and that one โkiller margarita!โ
Lol, I knew I should have had a Corona instead. ๐
Keep On Rockinโ ๐ค
Frank ๐ธ
Hi Frank! That sounds greatโฆand looks mighty fine lol! Sounds like a fun time. ๐
Keep on Rockin! ๐ค๐ธ
I just finished listening to the video you shared, Frank. I also stumbled upon "Zeus in Chains" as well. Fascinating!
But is there any reason why the third neck of his "Hydra" Guitar doesn't have a headstock on it?
Isaiah ๐
Hi Isaiah
The bottom bass neck is half fretless and half fretted. The โheadlessโ design makes tuning at the bridge somewhat more stable, at least theoretically.
The Steinberger guitars and basses are made that way.
The a wild video, right? Lol ๐
Rock On! ๐ค

Hey Frank
Great post, especially after the Margarita! ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I couldn't agree more with the Area 51 escapee comment! Steve has been one of my favorites for many, many years. I saw him with the triple neck, heart guitar while touring with David Lee Roth on his Skyscraper tour. The last time I saw him was in 2018 while on the Generation Axe tour.
I've also watched the movie "Crossroads" way too many times. ๐คฃ
Thanks again for all the great info, Frank! Rock On!!๐ค๐ธ๐ค๐ธ
Tim ๐ผ
Hi Tim
Yeah, I saw the Skyscraper tour, too! Wasn't that the show where David rode a surfboard across the room while he sang "California Girls??" Lol ๐คฃ
I met Steve at the Ibanez booth at 99' NAMM, and he signed a photo for me. Sorry about the "off-angle" in the attached photo. The light reflections in my music room can be hell. Hahaha
He's a very cool guy! I asked him about his 16-hour-a-day practice routine, and he started laughing & rolling his eyes; whatever that meant?; probably "don't f#%*ing try it." Lol! ๐
Rock On! ๐ค
Frank ๐ธ
That is awesome, Frank!
And you are correct, Dave rode the surfboard over the audience and across the room. Crazy! ๐
I believe my NAMM experience was around '89. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Steve, but I did get to meet Billy Sheehan, Reb Beach and Greg Howe.
BTW, I am still very jealous of your music room! ๐
Keep Rockin, Frank! ๐ธ๐ค๐ธ๐ค
Tim ๐ผ
Hi Tim
Yeah, Steve Vai & Billy Sheehan were known as the "Power Twins" back in the David Lee Roth/post Van Halen days!
David was really pissed when he was replaced with Sammy Hagar, which is why he got Steve & Billy and named his first album "Eat Em & Smile!" Lol ๐
When I'm not spending time at home with my wife, you'll find me in the music room! Lol ๐
