I've been fearing this as I heard of it maybe a year and a half ago. The internet has done much damage in creating disconnect within the social structures, family especially.
As so many young folks have grown up with their internet connections they have grown to embrace the virtual in many cases as being more real than natural life.
Once they can fully immerse themselves in a metaverse that appears 3d and is capable of stimulating the nervous system it's over, they have willingly chosen to live in a world almost identical to the Matrix movies. And I have no doubt a devastating amount of folks will indeed choose to hide from life there.

I fear you will be correct, to a large extent, with people building their own private virtual realities and giving access to select virtual individuals and other life forms.
If virtual reality becomes more functional than actual reality, significant paradigm-shifting events could ensue, resulting in a virtual singularity.
AIGM will make it possible and AI-controlled robotics will make it practical.
Since this tech isn’t going away, we’ll all need to learn how to co-exist with it in the most appropriate way.
