Hi WA Friends!

Here's my question for you today: Music videos have changed a lot over the years, but which era had the best ones?

Every decade has brought something new and exciting to music videos. Some people love the classic style of older videos, while others like the sleek, modern look of todayโ€™s videos.

The 80s - The Birth of MTV

(MTV Logo)

The 80s were a turning point for music videos, marked by the launch of MTV on August 1, 1981.

I remember the first day MTV came on the air. I was a medical student and watched the opening "moon landing" video on a hospital TV with a group of other physicians. You can see it here:

Do you remember Max Headroom?

https://youtu.be/6epzmRZk6UU?si=EDaMqe9rhCdOTUkf

The voice of Max was played by Matthew George Frewer, a Canadian-American actor and comedian.

MTV completely changed the music industry by making music videos a key part of promoting songs and artists. Suddenly, it wasn't just about listening - you could now watch artists perform in creative and visually captivating ways.

This gave artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince a new way to reach audiences, turning them into global superstars. Music videos became a powerful form of entertainment that shaped pop culture, with iconic visuals like Michael Jackson's "Thriller" bringing stories to life with bright colors, flashy outfits, and unforgettable scenes!

The 90s - Pushing Creative Boundaries

The 90s took what the 80s started and made it even more creative. This was the decade when music videos got artsy and different.

Nirvanaโ€™s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was raw, grungy, and full of that rebellious 90s energy. Directors like Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry brought crazy ideas and creative storytelling to videos like the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" and Bjรถrk's "Human Behaviour."

The 90s were all about experimenting with special effects and cool camera tricks. Music videos became an art form, not just a way to promote music.

The 2000s - High-Quality Productions and New Trends

In the 2000s, music videos got bigger budgets and started to look like mini-movies. High-definition cameras and advanced production techniques made the videos look super polished.

Artists like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Beyoncรฉ had highly choreographed dances, big sets, and high fashion. Videos like OutKastโ€™s "Hey Ya!" were colorful, fun, and full of personality, while Eminemโ€™s videos brought humor and social commentary.

The 2000s were all about making videos that could go viral - even before viral videos were really a thing!

Present Day - Technology Meets Social Media

Todayโ€™s music videos are all about using the newest technology and getting attention on social media.

Artists like Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, and The Weeknd use CGI, surreal images, and tons of symbols to make eye-catching videos. These videos are designed to go viral, whether on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram. The focus is on creating moments people want to share - like cool visual effects or surprising plot twists. Videos like Childish Gambinoโ€™s "This Is America" use visuals to make powerful statements.

Today, music videos arenโ€™t just for TV - theyโ€™re made for people to watch, like, and share over and over.

What are the MTV Awards?

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) started in 1984 to celebrate the best music videos of the year. The event became famous for its wild performances, shocking moments, and unforgettable pop culture highlights. Artists like Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West have all had iconic moments at the VMAs.

The VMAs include awards like Video of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Collaboration, recognizing artists across different genres. The first MTV Awards show featured some of the biggest names in music, kicking off an annual celebration of talent and creativity.

Winning a VMA is a big deal for artists, boosting their careers and showcasing their work. The show isn't just about awards - it's also about celebrating stars, new trends, and memorable performances!

My Memories of Music Videos Over the Years

I've watched music videos evolve and change in so many ways. During that time, more than a few MTV videos have caught my eye!

Here are a few examples.

ACโšก๏ธDC Surprise - I remember the first AC/DC video I saw on MTV like it was yesterday. Angus Young came onstage in his schoolboy uniform, complete with a book pack on his back, a hat with horns, and a Gibson SG guitar. I said to my friend, "Who is this idiot; can he actually play anything on that SG?" When he started playing, my eyeballs popped out of my head. It was beyond amazing guitar! Sorry, Angus! Hahaha ๐Ÿ˜‚

I couldn't find that video clip, but here's the official MTV "Heatseeker" video. I love it when Angus comes out of the missile! Lol ๐Ÿคฃ

Z Z Top and the Spinning Guitars - Then, there's the fabulous Z Z Top with the "fluffy" spinning guitars on the MTV "Legs" video. They still take these guitars on tour to do the Legs tune!

Robert Palmer: Addicted To Love - This is the video with the four girls all dressed in black playing all-white instruments (three guitars and one keyboard). Very cool presentation!

Due to my age and upbringing... it's the 90's for me Frank!

From Nirvana to Oasis, Coldplay and the Foo Fighters... best videos ever!!

But... I still prefer watching/listening to a live video/show.....

Then anything from the 60's and onwards Rock!!!

๐Ÿคฃ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿฅ‚

Hi Nick

Yup, nothing like a live concert or a recording of it on video! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Rock On! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿป
Frank ๐ŸŽธ

Absolutely spot on Frank!!

Rock On!

๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿป

This statement says it all, Frank.

"These videos are designed to go viral, whether on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram"

Madonna, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and others didn't have a video for every single song on their albums. Plus you had to wait for it to play on MTV or whatever music video show we had on in the 80s and 90s. Sometimes, scarcity makes me appreciate some things a little bit more.

I have many favorites: Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and "Beat it", Madonna's "Vogue", Eminem's "8 mile", and Justin Timberlake's "Suit and Tie" come to mind.

"Every breath you take" by the Police is a simple video, but the black and white cinematography and camera work has always stood out to me.

Appreciate the post! ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽธ
Isaiah ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Isaiah

Yup., MTV proved the power of short videos in music, and the video format is now taking the internet by storm in online marketing. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Before we know it, the online video marketing space will be dominated by AI.

Frank ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽธ

Hi Frank

Times,....they be a changin! Music videos are no different. You are so right about how music videos have evolved over the years.

Although I've never been one to watch a ton of music videos, the handful that stick in my mind are "Thriller", "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake, "You Might Think" by the Cars (that fly cracked me up), "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N Roses and one of my favorites is "Goin Crazy" by David Lee Roth (the extended version). Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan are monsters!

My favorite music videos have always been live, or simulated live videos of the bands.

Keep Rockin!! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŽธ

Tim ๐ŸŽผ

Hi Tim

Hahaha, that's a little too much Picasso Brothers for me! Also, that video is totally pantomimed. Steve's guitar doesn't even have a whammy bar installed, and he's doing dive-bomb effects.

Yeah, Steve and Billy, also known as the "power twins," are totally awesome players.

David formed that band with Steve and Billy to get back at Van Halen after his departure. The album cover on "Eat Em and Smile" shows David with his face painted as a cannibal! Lol ๐Ÿ˜†

Yup, I mostly watch live music concert videos on DVD and Blu-ray. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Keep On Rockin'! ๐Ÿค˜
Frank ๐ŸŽธ

Hi Frank

That video is totally pantomimed! At one point Steve is trying to play left handed! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ I really enjoy all of the added humor in those videos.

And you are ๐Ÿ’ฏ correct, Dave did a lot of things to get back at the Van Halen brothers.

Rock On!! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŽธ

Tim ๐ŸŽผ

All the David Lee Roth and VH videos are fun to watch, Tim! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I saw David live in-concert with Steve & Billy, where David rides the surfboard over the audience. Lol ๐Ÿ˜†

Frank ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽธ

Hey Frank

I saw that tour as well. If I remember correctly, which I rarely do, Steve had the triple neck, heart shaped guitar. I do remember the surfboard, but I went to more than one of his shows and my memory is a bit blurry. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Dave's a crazy one! ๐Ÿ˜œ

Tim ๐ŸŽผ

Hi Tim

Yup, you got it right, and it looked like he was playing two necks at once - one with each hand, but he was just faking it. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Frank ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽธ

Hahaha, I read the "I was just faking it" article as well.

But it looked cool as hell!! ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

Tim ๐ŸŽผ

Very, very cool, Tim! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Have you seen the movie "Crossroads" with Ralph Macchio, where Steve plays the devil's guitar player?

Frank ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽธ

Yes sir, I have it on DVD. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Tim ๐ŸŽผ

Jack Butler, right?

Nice! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Hahaha, Yup - Playing the song "Bad Horsie!" ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I think the present day videos are better. They have clearer pictures and better visual effects and better quality of videos. I think modern technology has revolutionized everything.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Martin

Yes, I agree with you. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

It will be really interesting to see what happens when virtually all commercial videos are created by AI.

Frank ๐ŸŽธ

I bet that won't be long. Things are changing rapidly at terrific speed.

Absolutely! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Who would have ever thought that people would spend hours โ€œwatching musicโ€ on a TV screen?

Hahaha, Brad.

You're right, but as soon as I saw MTV's format, I knew it would be a big hit! ๐Ÿ˜Ž
