Why Formatting Text Matters

A blog is not just a heap of words. Without structure, it becomes a flatland: wide, empty, and difficult to navigate. Good formatting turns that flatland into a landscape with paths, landmarks, and destinations.

A blog is not just a heap of words...
A flatland without travelled roads.
It is a landscape asking to be discovered.

Our eyes (and brain) need to capture the structure, the frame, the form, the landscape.

Some golden rules here.

Use headings.
Use paragraphs.
Use relief (italic, bold, underscore).
Use quotes.
Use images.
Use space.
Use punctuation (em dash is part of it in editorial text).

And make sure to use proper wording that matches the subject and your own style.

Mostly beat weak images

Lost to every top image

Beat several top-ranked images

Only lost narrowly to the best ones

Even though Image A has more wins, Image B may deserve a higher rank because it performed better against stronger competition.

Formatted (as they say) according to editorial rules.

Imagine four images.

  • Beat several top-ranked images
  • Only lost narrowly to the best ones

Even though Image A has more wins, Image B may deserve a higher rank because it performed better against stronger competition.
